From the Back Cover
First published twenty years ago, this revised edition of John Sanford's classic exploration of the psychological and spiritual significance of dream draws on the work of C. G. Jung to show how dreams can help us find healing and wholeness and reconnect us to a living spiritual world. Featuring a new preface by the author and using case histories from his own experience as a counselor, 'Dreams' traces the role of dreams in the Bible, analyzing their nature and examining how Christians, through fear and the constraints of dogma, have come to reject the visions through which God speaks to humanity, making dreams--in Sanford's words--'God's forgotten language.'

Excellent read. I've given numerous copies as gifts to friends. has created many thoughtful conversation with others who have read it. Recommend it for the existentialists out there.
I liked the first section of the book with examples of case studies in Sanford's clinical practice and illustrations from the Bible. The second section was an attempt to trace dreams through the history of Christianity and show how modern day Christianity is failing to honor their dreams. It was hard to get through. i didn't like the tone and there was too much information.
Basic information on shadow work and the unconscious. I've lent and repurchased the book several times. A must introduction to self-awareness and shadow work.
Taught a six week study on dreams at our Church. Your quick delivery helped us get started on time. This is the most recent printing. John Sanford's excellent work regarding dreams and biblical revelation is thoughtful and provocative. Discussion was brisk as we shared our own impressions and reinterpreted our dreams. Thank you for having this book when no one else did.
I really liked this slim and pithy volume, and would have given it 5 stars but for the 2nd part that became a bit overly bogged down with the Biblical/monotheistic side for me, since I'm not a Christian. And although somewhat repetitious I did find it all very educational, and inspiring for my own dream-work. However given that this was probably written in the early to mid 60's (published in '68) and draws on Sanford's religious counseling work from decades before it is remarkably fresh and insightful. I do think popular psychology has come a long way since then, especially as a result of the psychedelic revolution of the 60's-70's where the Shadow (and other psychic archetypes) became much more acknowledged, but much of this material is timeless.I love that he brings this Jungian approach to psychology into his understanding and presentation of the Bible;"But today many of us have decided that we do not want to "contaminate" our contemplation of the divine by allowing anything as nebulous and unsettling as the unconscious to intrude. We have decided that we may find God through rational thinking, or a "group experience," or education, or formal worship - everywhere except in our own soul, which is in fact the fountain of religious experience. The result is that we Christians are afraid today of that very soul from which our heritage springs; we want creeds, not religious experiences, and dogma, not inspiration. Above all, we refuse to accept the nonrational unconscious, because it threatens the tyranny of rationality that has gripped us today." (P. 94-95)And even more succinctly;"But alas: We Christians all too often reject the very psyche through which God speaks. Dreams illuminate the problem of the opposites and help us to become aware of the irrational, paradoxical center of personality that can bring healing and regeneration. But we all too often cast aside, despise, reject, and fear the very dreams through which God speaks." (p. 167)Overall this little book goes a long way to strengthen an understanding of the esoteric heart of religion AND the daily glimpse we all get of the divine in our dreams.
I am still reading . Such an interesting topic. This book was recommended to me and I am enjoying it very much.
