This is a marvelous graphic novel about a summer in the life of author Mark Tatulli. As the title hints – he was short & skinny and resolved to end this situation. As many of us did in those days, we put some money in an envelope and sent it off in hope of a miracle. Unfortunately, all Mark got in return was a rubber strip, a Hercules wrist band of power, some gaggy powder to drink and lots of useless advice. A life lesson – of course.Mark’s dream is to be a cartoonist and 1977 is the year of Star Wars. A whole new world opened for him when he saw the movie. He immediately decided to do his own Stars Wars mockumentary so he starts story boarding it. His version will be called Star Bores. It will feature Fluke Skystumbler, obi-Dope Cantaloupe among others. The whole book is filled with crazy characters. He has 3 enemies, each fleshed out as only an animator and TV producer can do. They are horrid children who are intent to make Mark’s life miserable. The summer of 77 sums up the life of poor Mark as he stumbles through love, runs from bullies, swims with the losers but most of all works on his magnum opus – the Star Bores Movie. The book is full of subtle reference to the time. I was reminded of The Goldberg’s but this takes place a decade earlier but with the same charm of seeing it through a boy’s eyes. This book is so well done; it has attention to detail and a story line with will please both young and old. I love it.

As an adult who remembers being a kid in the 70's and seeing Star Wars for the first time (It was an incredible experience, wasn't it!) I really enjoyed this graphic novel memoir. Today's kids probably can't imagine a world without Star Wars or truly appreciate why it was so unique in its day but I believe they will relate to Mark's pain at not fitting in with the other kids. In his case, it was being too short and too skinny. Others may feel they are too tall, too big, too fat, or whatever. This book addresses that issue beautifully, without being heavy handed on the lesson. Readers will meet Mark's family, his friends, his crush and the bullies that occasionally make his life miserable. Follow Mark through the summer after his seventh grade year as he continues to be an underachiever on the swim team, goes on a family vacation, discovers Star Wars and tries out all the "short and skinny" cures from the back of his comic books. It's a fun read but heartwarming, too.

This graphic novel about to he author's own experiences as a beginning seventh grader in 1977 could not have been done better. I loved everything about this book from the exciting drawings to what a short and skinny boy with weak self body image to a very active imagination. He has three bullies to contend with. Also he is very embarrassed about his size. I felt for him, in seventh grade I was overweight and shy with a passion for books .Mark is the middle child, stuck between a big and strong older brother and a very athletic younger and bigger sister. The first day of school started off with a scoliosis exam. What a horrible surprise for him to have take off his shirt in front of the other boys. He does have crush on Lisa and he would like to impress her with the size and muscles that he does nor have. But his passion to be a cartoonist who writes with humor is key to his eventual success.

Short & Skinny is a graphic novel that I chose with my kids in mind. While I don't often read them, my children really like them. This novel is sort of autobiographical and I can tell the author put a lot of feeling into the tale. It's about his time in middle school when he is short and skinny and wants to change things so he's not such a target for bullies. He sees Star Wars when it comes out the theaters and has an idea to reinvent himself. He makes his own cartoon spin off of the movie and finds the confidence he had been searching for.I thought the panels were well illustrated in this book. It was quick to read, both for me and my kids. It's recommended for ages 8 and up and I think that is a good target. From my experience, reluctant readers in elementary school (including one of my own children) are more willing to read a graphic novel than one without illustrations. I think this would be a good option in those cases to ease a young reader into bigger books that have a combination of words and illustrations. It's also great for children who love to read and enjoy graphic novels along with chapter books.

This is an autobiographical comic about a summer the author was in middle school. His father worked in movie sets, he'd seen Star Wars that summer when it came out, and he'd gotten his friends to make a parody version. He had a camera probably because of his family working in film, and bought film with his money from a part time job.He also does middle school things. He is short and skinny, and buys a bunch of bulking up kits from the back of magazines because this will be the summer he bulks up, so he plans. These are mostly small quantities of protein shakes, flimsy workout equipment like large rubber bands that break fast, or workout plans. He also is interested in girls without talking to them, and deals with neighborhood kids including some same age as him bullies. The book covers just that summer between 7th and 8th grade. It's very much nostalgic and about the time period of the late 70s as well. The author still likes Star Wars now, and Star Wars and his parody version that he'd made in middle school, Star Bores is very much a topic of the book. It's also got humor. Many of the bulking up kits were painful let downs in middle school, but now funny for the author. I'd thought it was overly nostalgic, but I'm not the same age as the author, so your mileage may vary.Pics are a cartoon style similar to the cover. The whole book is black and white.

Every chapter in this workbook-sized book presents a different theme of poetry and then gives ideas that inspire teens to write their own poem. It is motivating and realistic. Teachers will find this book easy to use and will return to it time and again when they want to fire up their students' creative voice.

There are a lot of good ideas for integrating poetry into curriculum. The book has lesson ideas as well as examples. It is easy to implement.

Poems and discussion quesions are published together in chapters according to themes. Good for high school English. I like that I can copy the poems for the students. The writing exercises are also effective. This is the one poetry book I use.

An essential addition to any Chess library! Chess has a history that dates back eons and its important to be able to "look back" and see the game's evolution. Take notation for example. I recently purchased a copy of "Think Like a Grandmaster"c.1971 Kotov. This book uses "control notation" vs. algebraic. This volume explains it fully and thus was essential to be able to understand Kotov. If you are heavily into chess you'll enjoy just cracking it open and reading about the history and historical players of old. Rather dry it certainly isn't a page turner but fun none the less :)

An excellent overall survey of chess and many tangentially connected subjects. Entries include bio's, discussions of various openings, famous tournaments, chess problems, historical development and a host of well-written essays on chess minutae. The bios can be somewhat terse and carry the authors ' subjective opinions, but this is unavoidable and in no way limits their value here.An appendix contains an eminently useful array of virtually every opening with moves and names. This is perhaps less useful than it was when published due to the abundant availability of chess software, but I find myself referring to it often. This is an excellent reference and book for browsing. I sincerely hope that an updated volume is released at some point.

This book was delivered promptly and in superb condition, which seems always to be the case when I order used books from Amazon. I have the First Edition and once had this Second Edition as well. The short of it is that I sold most of my personal 350-volume chess library around 2006 during a fiscal "rough patch" and I've been gradually replenishing the essential core titles ever since. This Second Edition is basically a reiteration of the First Edition minus some of its less important entries and with new entries added. I kept the First Edition because it had several entries that I valued which are conspicuously absent from the newer version. Both, though, feature a comprehensive supplemental openings chart with foot-notes giving the popular names to facilitate searching for particular openings in the encyclopedia text.

This is a fascinating book for lovers of chess. It sits on our dining table; I can open it at random and always find a fascinating entry; of course, the entry suggests to me another idea to look up and so it goes on; if you are as interested in chess as I am, and even if, like me, you are not so good at chess, it will be an enjoyable book to have; it would make a good gift for a friend who is interested in chess and an excellent addition to a school library. The hard back, used copy that I purchased is excellent.

A very interesting volume containing everything about chess you can imagine from biographies of great players, to named main lines and variations, chess terminology, history, openings, trivia, and more. It contains a number of diagrams, photos, illustrations and drawings. I bought a used 2nd edition published in 1992 because that was the only reasonably priced copy available at Amazon. I wish Oxford would publish an updated third edition. Yes, the information may all be available on line, but you have to hunt for it. I like this book because I can underline and make marginal comments, etc. A good source of a lot of varied information about chess in one handy volume.

Absolutely love this companion book. Learned so much about chess and it's rich history. Although the edition I got was over two decades old, it was still relevant since Chess is a game which transcends time and culture.

It's just what you would expect. All things chess in alpha order. My only complaint is that the print is a little on the small side.

A little bit of everything. Good overview of all things chess.

I looked for quit a while trying to decide what calligraphy book to buy and ended up going to a large bookstore in our area so I could look through the books in person, they had approximately a dozen different calligraphy books. This one stood heads above the rest.I am about 1 month into calligraphy and don't plan to go beyond the fountain pen type pen. But if I do decide to go further this book gives information plentiful, varied and detailed enough that I could set up a professional workshop if I chose to go there in the future. The book is very comprehensive. It covers gilding, pens from fountain to dip pens, papers , how to setup and prepare a workspace, needed tools. This section you can following completely or easily determine how much, how little and what you do or do not need for your personal needs.I love that the book addresses holding the pen for right and left handers. There are 10 alphabets to choose from learn one or all and concise instructions on how to make each letter, ie... pen placement and stroke order.Other areas covered are doing calligraphy on colored papers, mixing colored inks to make new colors, how to choose color combinations. Also included is the pretty stuff, flourishing, which are all the pretty curly cues and such that you may want to add to a letter, a line or a border. Ornamentation of say like a capital letter at the beginning of a book, an invitation, or announcement where they make a beautiful capital letter and then add pretty designs like leaves, flowers, these specially flourished capital letters are often contained within a square then embellished with ornamentation and different colors, even gold leafing or embossing, which of course the book covers. This book also gives ideas and how to's on making pretty borders around your paper , or just in one corner of the paper, or up one side of the paper. Design ideas and layouts are included, they show how to make your design on graph paper first is you need to keep the design lined up with the letter or other parts of the design. This means that you can make up your own ideas for your own design after a little practice, very cool. The book ends with 60 pages of various calligraphy projects, running a big variety of design, style and materials. Then at the very end there is a wonderful list of resources, suppliers etc....I am so glad I did my homework, I know I have chosen the only book I will every need on calligraphy unless I want to get into the kind of flourishing where they draw birds and other designs. I should be so lucky to get to that stage, but I love thinking maybe someday I will. This book has everything you need for a long time to come and is an excellent value.

I had no idea how comprehensive this book was when I ordered it on a whim to go with my pointed pen manual. It's just awesome and has motivated me to return to some square pen work.

Exactly what I expected.
