Review

"Undivided Rights is the most complete account of the vital contribution made by women of color to the contemporary reproductive rights movement. By giving these organizers the attention they deserve, the authors illuminate a distinctive vision for reproductive health and freedom that demands an end to social inequities. Essential reading for anyone committed to the struggle for reproductive justice."―Dorothy Roberts, author of Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty"For most women of color in the United States, our herstories are grounded in the sobering fact that our foremothers and our mothers didn’t have control over their reproductive freedom. And yet, many valiantly resisted. I am a generational beneficiary of that resistance.Undivided Rights is a necessary and compelling documentation of African-American/Black, Indigenous/Native American, Latin@, Asian and Pacific Islander women health activists’ radical organizing, which resulted in the reproductive justice movement. Moving beyond the important question of “choice,” this groundbreaking text demonstrates how reproductive justice is “theory, a lived practice, and a strategy,” which focuses on all aspects of women of color reproductive health and lives. It squarely places those women who are the most marginalized front and center of any dialogue or movement that is focused on all women’s health. Undivided Rights is as timely in 2016 if not more so now than it was when it was first published in 2004."―Aishah Shahidah Simmons, Producer/Writer/Director, NO! Because it focuses on women of color organizing, it helps decenter the ‘pro-choice’ paradigm and situates reproductive justice within a larger framework of social, political, and economic justice.”―Andrea Smith, founding member, INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence“Undivided Rights offers an impressive account of specific African American, Native American, Asian American, and Latina organizations that have fought to make a variety of reproductive health rights a reality for women of color. It demonstrates the overlaps and differences between issues of reproductive health as they arise in various communities of color and documents both historical and contemporary contours of community struggles for reproductive justice. An accessible and important resource for anyone who wishes to understand the ways in which women of color have both practically and theoretically expanded the terrain of feminist concerns about reproductive rights and justice.”―Uma Narayan, author, Dislocating Cultures: Identities, Traditions, and Third World Feminism“Undivided Rights brings together stories of victory and challenge of women of color reproductive rights organizing. This book taught me a lot about pro-choice women of color and the organizations they founded. It was interesting to see that for many African-American, Asian, Latino, and American Indian women, the paradigm of "choice" didn't apply as much as for white women. The book talks about how these pro-choice groups had a wider focus than just making/keeping abortion legal – the issues they supported included the availability of women's healthcare and the right of women to have children as well is having abortions. This sometimes puts them at odds with the mainstream pro-choice (mainly white) movement. I feel I learned a lot from this book, and the authors did a good job of making it interesting.

Good book

I loved the tid bits of information she gives in the beginning of each chapter. Very well done and nicely written. But too confusing reading tons of organizations their names and what they did one after the other

Useful as a text book type source for those learning about reproductive justice.

This groundbreaking book documents the courageous activism of feminists of color fighting for reproductive freedom. Faced with the oftentimes blatant racism and classism of the mainstream women's movement and obstacles of sexism amongst many of the men within their racial communities, these women are bravely demanding access to abortions and an end to sterilization abuse. With the anti-choice opposition trying to control female sexuality and reduce women's bodies to baby-making factories, this book is more important than ever. Not to mention that race and class are still pressing issues in this country, as evidenced by the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and recent attempts to further criminalize undocumented immigrants . However, though the book details the thoughts and actions of African-American, Latina, Asian-American, and Native American feminists, I was disappointed that it neglected to mention the work being done by Arab-Americans. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book, and unfortunately an urgent one.

So this book covers different reproductive rights issues from different women's health advocate organization. Most chapters are set up in that they discuss the group in general before giving a background on the organization, the key issues, founding women, and organizations structure and function. The women of color include African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Pacific Islanders. I gave it three stars because it situates reproductive rights issues for each group in terms of their background and communities. True this book is outdated but the issues in it a far from it. The format of the book is quite dense, however its a very interesting book. Some of these organizations are still in existence or have formed new ones.

This book should is powerful, and very dense.

Review

BILL STRICKLAND, EDITOR-AT-LARGE OF BICYCLINGBike Snob should be lovingly gifted to all new cyclers - and forcefully smacked against the heads of all the jaded know-it-alls who take the sport way too seriously.ROBERT LANHAM, AUTHOR OF THE HIPSTER HANDBOOKAs any avid biker will attest, cycling isn't just a form of transportation. It's a complicated culture with its own slang, taxonomy, and preferred tat styles. If you haven't read Bike Snob, you should consider reattaching those training wheels to your overpriced fixie.LANCE ARMSTRONGI like to think I know a thing or two (or three) about being ruthless and relentless - either trying to win the Tour or fighting cancer. The Snob knows it too. Keeping us dorks in line is tough work. I take pleasure in getting picked on by the Snob, slightly more pleasure in reading his writing, but take the most pleasure punishing his ass (my payback) on the bike either in Central Park or on 9W/River Road. Long live the Snob.ELDEN "FATTY" NELSON, FATCYCLIST.COMFirst you'll think the Snob is funny. Then you'll think he's smart. Eventually you'll probably think that he's seen far too many movies for his own good. At some point during this book, however, you re going to say to yourself: Holy crap. He is right. Believe me, that is one disconcerting moment.CHRISTIAN LANDER, AUTHOR OF STUFF WHITE PEOPLE LIKEAfter reading Bike Snob I put a brake on my fixie, started wearing a helmet, then punched myself in the stomach for spending so much time as a stupid hipster. This is a social manual that should be bundled with every bike shipped in America.

Don't expect another "How-to" guide to ride a bicycle, training for the next big competition, or fixing your bike here. This book is almost all about what Grant Petersen coined as "Velosophy". I read through it in one Saturday afternoon and evening and had a blast, causing startling looks from my wife and neighbors because I was constantly LOL-ing by myself while staring on a little tablet [I got the Kindle Version]. Among other things I found out that I am an "Urban Lone Wolf" bike rider with a little bit of "Retro-grouch" in the mix :-) To find out in which biker category you belong (and much more) I recommend to read this book."Velosophy", as well as the kind of humor expressed by the author, might not be everybody's 'cup of tea'. Fortunately Amazon has a "look in" feature on most of the books and also delivers a free sample into your Kindle. I recommend to do that, and if you enjoy what's in the sample you also will enjoy reading the whole book. Very entertaining with bits of rather unusual information, especially concerning early biking history of the U.S.!

Got about a third of the way through this before I threw it in the trash. Too much personal history unrelated to bikes, too much vulgarity that I'm sure the author thought was humor, and then, just before I binned it, far too much pop-political bashing of Americans and parts of America unlike the author's culturally myopic upbringing (he thinks New England and Manhattan are two distinct regions of the country, and everyplace that isn't there is "the West"). Too much, and totally uncalled for, American culture assassination. Left the bikes behind for personal political diatribes, and lost this reader for good.

The Bike Snob writes a wickedly funny blog poking holes in practically every pretension in the cycling world. His blog careens unexpectedly between the worlds of pro cycling, hipsters, fixed gear bikes, Craigslist ads and the indignity of bike commuting (especially in New York). He never runs out of targets -- the studied poses of various cycling subcultures has given him an unending stream of targets. In print -- both in his columns in Bicycling Magazine, and now in this book -- he's a bit toned done. In order to reach a broader audience, his writing is a little more accessible, with fewer self-referential, super-inside jokes that propel the humor in his blog. In print, the satire is still there, but the very sharpest edges have been softened a bit. What's left is a still-funny survey of the world of bicycling in America -- from a brief history of cycling, to a tour of the various cycling subcultures, to some guidance on how to perform basic bike maintenance tasks. The Snob also addresses the "real world" of urban cycling today: what it's like to try to control your temper when a car nearly kills you in traffic, or how to stay warm and dry in a winter rain. And although The Snob avoids organized "bicycle advocacy" efforts (and explains why in his book), he manages to deliver some solid pro-bicycle messages of his own: "Telling cyclists to get out of the road is like telling women to get of the voting booth and go back into the kitchen, or telling Japanese-American people to 'Go back to China.' The ignorance inherent in the statement is almost more offensive than the sentiment behind it."While he's at it, he tries to knock some sense into cyclists themselves -- questioning the sanity of riding brakeless track bikes on the street, for example, and poking fun at the marketing-driven compulsion of "roadies" to endlessly upgrade their bikes (especially those that are most likely to get stolen anyway). Some overall themes that emerge are encouraging to the newcomer ("get out and ride"), while persuading the cycling-obsessed to take themselves (and their bikes) a bit less seriously. (He holds a special disdain for "bicycle fetishists" who are more focused on their gear than on riding: "They keep their bicycles clean all the time, they fear scratches like they're herpes, and they don't ever ride in the rain...so their bikes won't get dirty or rusty. They're like the people who collect toys but don't remove them from the package so as not to diminish their value." )The book is a must-buy for fans of the blog, and great gift for the cyclist in your family.

A light fun look at the multifaceted world of cycling. The larger purpose of the book is to simply ride, regardless of the stripe you embrace.I have been riding a 1970 Bianchi out in the country for decades a rip van winkle of cycling who had no idea how cycling had evolved until I moved to Austin. This book has wittily and hilariously helped clairfy the various displines and why I get stares from the A team Roadie riders. (I thought sequined tops from vintage evening gowns would make me more visable while in traffic in bike lanes.) I have updated to a Cipollini Seaco era Cannondale down to the yellow tires like his 1998-2000. I am letting my freak flag fly in Austin and no one has used the "L" word to me anyway!I will be referencing your observations often!!! Witty, fun, and bang on.

If you know his work and find it entertaining then this book is for you. I am a fan of the man. It is unclear to me what a non cyclist or a non fan would get from this book. I enjoy his blog more. In his blog he gives voice to the reality of being a cyclist today and is one of the few voices crying bulls*** loudly and frequently. Having said that, I encourage you to buy the book so he does not need to erect a paywall on his blog in order to a)feed his 9000 children, b)pay the shipping charges to send back all those demo/test/loaner bikes he has that he never returned, or c)move his family across the pond so he can become an apprentice Chamfeur (sp?) at Brooks.

This book is basically Body for Life w/ juice (steroids).Which is interesting because a lot of the before and after photos in Body for Life were on juice---they just didn't admit it.Good book.I personally feel he recommends overtraining, but that's really all a matter of opinion. This is an important read for all males over the age of about 30.He's spot on in all his recommendations... I trust him, I like him and he's the real deal.

This book is straight to the pint as well as the "21 Pounds In 21 Days". Again, this is not Dr. J. Life's most recent book, but due to my financial budget, I also got this book for about $3.00 used. Dr. Life's book has a lot of pix of exercises and includes some information about "Genetics" which is totally new to me. I like the realistic pictures of some of the studies who had those "Pot Bellies" and then went to normal age looking but slimmer shapes. Then there were those who looked like Dr. Life with from the neck down, it looks like an edited pix. I will be incorporating the techniques illustrated into my budget of courser and using his website for different strategies. It sucks to be on a show string budget but oh so real!:-]] I recommend the book for all those who are seriously considering using weights for the first time, like myself at age 50 plus. It looks like a lot of low impact exercises. Although, I don't know if a trainer would be better, it sure is a bit more pricey and out of my league.

This is a great read with a ton of information supported by research and backed up with lots of references for the aging over 50 population, it encouraged me to start taking a different approach to me health. I have since changed my exercise routine and diet habbits and I am down about 20 pounds and am much healthier because of it. Finding a doctor who will believe you truly are being objective about your aging and want to be proactive in it is difficult to do. You may want to research doctors in your area who follow the same path of logic.

Pretty much a sales tool for the Cenagenics program. Gives some good advice on supplements. The exercise and nutrition parts can be found in most fitness lifestyle books. It wasn't worth the price.

I'd been researching and trying a number of approaches to diet and exercise, including ideas from the four hour body, the slow carb diet, body by science, the bulletproof exec, power to the people etc, but the Life plan added new perspective in a way that I finally got it, and in addressing some of the weaknesses in my fitness plan I'm getting much closer to shaving off those last few stubborn pounds of the spare tire. I find Dr Life to be an encouraging example of the level of fitness it is possible to achieve and maintain even at an age where most men have given up.

I did not like this book. The plans suggested are very high T injections and may not be what is accepted by the industry as normal therapy. Better to do some cardio and resistance training and eat a good diet than mess around with this level of T injections

This was a pop up on line ad. Looked up Cenergenics Center and purchased it. It is a very good book. It gives you a great nutrition plan to follow as well as an exercise program. With the exercise program you will need time in the gym. Dr Life spent a lot of time in the gym to get to where he is today and at the center. If you have the time the exercises will work. If not do the best you can with the exercises. The nutrition program will help you loose weight. I do recommend this if you are into the gym.

The Life Plan is excellent. Dr. Life recommends that men get tested for low testosterone, which can cause a lot of health problems, and if low, begin testosterone replacement therapy. The book also recommends eating more but smaller meals each day, and furnishes detailed information regarding proper diet, healthy recipes, and physical exercises, to improve health and muscle tone. Dr. Life does not recommend testosterone solely for better performance in sports. He recommends testosterone only if testing indicates treatment is necessary. Dr. Life also has a Website offering a lot more information regarding this subject; including products (expensive) if desired, and personal treatment and advice from Dr. Life. This is a very comprehensive book about health for men.
