The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage (Book of Dust, Volume 1), by Philip Pullman

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2017: Philip Pullman is that rare breed of author whose books are written for young people but are read and adored equally by adults. It’s been nearly two decades since Pullman wrote The Amber Spyglass, so it was both thrilling and terrifying (please be amazing, please be amazing…) when I first cracked open The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage and began to read. I need not have worried--The Book of Dust is Pullman at his best. Neither prequel nor sequel to His Dark Materials trilogy—Pullman calls this an “equel” and La Belle Sauvage is the first volume of a companion trio that can stand on its own. There are some familiar faces—most notably an infant Lyra Belacqua and her daemon Pantalaimon--and a particularly delightful new one: a boy named Malcolm whose kind heart, curious mind, and unerring sense of good, are the reason baby Lyra makes it to the safety of Jordan College. As in his earlier books, Pullman explores themes of religious and political freedom, the nature of good and evil, science and philosophy. The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage is a glorious adventure that delivers heart-in-your-throat moments and much to think about as we wait (not so patiently) to see what will happen next…--Seira Wilson

"Reading this novel is like standing in a room in which suddenly all of the windows have blown open at once." —Slate "It's a stunning achievement, the universe Pullman has created and continues to build on." —The New York Times"A phantasmagoric waterborne odyssey. Mr. Pullman is a supple and formidable writer." —The Wall Street Journal "Enthralling, enchanting. The first half reads like a thriller. The story becomes darker, deeper and even more engrossing when a cataclysmic flood overtakes Southern England. A triumphant return to the alternate Oxford we love."—Bustle"The Book of Dust passes by in one tumultuous wave of literature, that leaves you queasy, but wanting the next volume as quickly as possible. It deserves not only a reread, but an unpacking. It is not a one and done novel, something that, in a time where binging and passing is the status quo. This is a novel to digest. One to take in, let settle, and then revisit. We are lucky to have Pullman's words. Words that will continue to nourish the souls and imaginations of readers for a long, long time." —Hypable"Once again, Pullman’s fantasy arrives precisely when it can teach us the most about ourselves, as if it were guided by Dust itself." —Entertainment Weekly"High-octane adventure accompanies ingenious plotting." The Times (London)"Lyra Silvertongue, Lyra Belacqua, but really just Lyra: one of those characters—Pip, Emma, Lolita—who is on first-name terms with her public."—The New York Times Magazine"Pullman's imagery is as dazzling as ever. PULLMAN, Philip. The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage. Knopf. 2017. 451p. $22.95.Here’s an example of what makes Philip Pullman’s writing so special. It’s early in the first volume of his new fantasy trilogy, The Book of Dust. Malcolm, eleven years old and the son of an innkeeper, is the protagonist. He’s rock solid, good and decent, and observant beyond his years. As in the previous trilogy, His Dark Materials, Malcolm, like everybody in this imagined world, has his own daemon, an opposite sex animal familiar tied to him both geographically (if the familiar moves away from her master, the master must follow) and psychically. The choice of animal for one’s daemon tells something about one’s character. Later in the book, the evil Gerard Bonneville is revealed as having a hyena as his daemon, and unlike the closeness that exists between other masters and their daemons, Bonneville abuses his.Now to the example I promised. Malcolm has just been permitted to see the little baby, six-months-old Lyra, who is being cared for in a nunnery near his father’s inn. Read on."Malcolm had never seen a baby at close quarters, and he was struck at once by how real she seemed. He knew that would be a silly thing to say, so he held his tongue, but that was his impression all the same: it was unexpected that something so small should be so perfectly formed. … Her daemon, the chick of a small bird like a swallow, was asleep with her, but as soon as Asta [Malcolm’s familiar] flew down, swallow-shaped too, and perched on the edge of the crib, the chick woke up and opened his yellow beak wide for food. Malcolm laughed, and that woke the baby, and seeing his laughing face, she began to laugh too. Asta pretended to snap at a small insect and thrust it down the baby daemon’s gaping mouth, which satisfied him, making Malcolm laugh harder, and then the baby laughed so hard she got the hiccups, and every time she hicked, the daemon jumped.“ 'There, there,' said Sister Fenella, and bent to pick her up; but as she lifted the baby, Lyra’s little face crumpled into an expression of grief and terror, and she reached round for her daemon, nearly twisting herself out of the nun’s arms. Astra was ahead of her: she took the little chick in her mouth and flew to place him on the baby’s chest, at which point he turned into a miniature tiger cub and hissed and bared his teeth at everyone. All the baby’s dismay vanished at once, and she lay in Sister Fenella’s arms, looking around with a lordly complacency.Malcolm was enchanted. Everything about her was perfect and delighted him."That’s magical: simply presented but with an aura of wonder to it. And even as the scene is being set –a young boy seeing a baby for the first time—magic (the daemons) intrudes on the scene. You have also a sense of what Malcolm is like and a vague premonition that Lyra’s and Malcolm’s relationship will be important to the rest of the book, probably –possibly? —across the remaining books of this trilogy as well.La Belle Sauvage (the name of Malcolm’s most treasured possession, a canoe) inhabits the same world of magic-physics as the preceding trilogy –sub-atomic dust leaking in through cracks of the world, scientists’ exploitation of the uncertainty principle, a weird but believable instrument that lies half way between astrology and physics and is called the alethiometer, which measures truth but uncertainly. The events of this series take place earlier than the happenings of the previous series but the enemy is the same: a devouring church hierarchy cracks down on heresy, cowing young and old as efficiently as ever did Torquemada. (“How can knowing something be sinful?” Malcolm asks one time.)The first trilogy, His Dark Materials, came close to saving my sanity. It came out when I was leaving for Dubai to take a job twelve time zones away from my family. I was lonely! I needed something all-consuming to read to take my mind off my isolation. I finished the first installment on the plane ride over (twenty-one hours, seventeen on the plane); the second, soon after I arrived; and the third, as soon as it came out --in England, not the United States –it came out there earlier. Like those books, La Belle Sauvage offers small (turns of phrase, particular descriptions of places or people) and large (scary, powerful bad guys, and good guys with interesting characters and pasts; a large-scale, almost cosmic fight for noble goals) pleasures. It will keep the reader reading from start to end with no stop.

I have been waiting sixteen years for this book. If you haven't read His Dark Materials, read those three first. If you already have, all you need to know is that Pullman reaches the same emotional depth, and continues to stare unflinchingly at the pain, loneliness, hope and bravery of the human spirit. I received The Golden Compass as a birthday gift in middle school. I was in Brazil and 14 years old when the The Amber Spyglass came out. I ordered it before the internet made international shipping easy and read it for a day and a half straight. Now I'm 31 and I finished the Book of Dust last night. It was like coming home again. If you, upon discovering The Golden Compass, also felt that you were finally finding answers to questions that rarely get asked, let alone answered, if reading His Dark Materials made you feel more connected to absolutely everything, if you also are disquieted by the extremism that tramples on the cautious, the kind and the considerate, then read The Book of Dust. It won't let you down.

The Book of Dust, Phillip Pullman's "equal" (both before and after His Dark Materials) is a delight--a wonderfully welcome return to the familiar but strangely different parallel world of Lyra Bellacqua, Lord Asriel and the chilling Mrs Coulter. Like our own planet, theirs is beset by ecological catastrophe--not heating up but dripping wet as they suffer deluge after deluge. As with global warming, nobody believes a catastrophe is nigh (except the water-wise Gyptians) until it strikes. Apparently, when Reason meets Superstition the latter will win no matter where in the Multiverse you reside. The forces of conservatism are stirring and the iniquitous Magisterium is ascendant. Baby Lyra is prophesied by witches to be of vital importance to the future. Needless to say, she is a person of interest to both the forces of Reason and Religion.Like the author's previous work, La Belle Sauvage is unapologetically political and unabashedly Liberal. There is, for example, The League of Alexander, a club of adolescent religious snitches who squeal on their families' or friends' slightest misdeed (the League's eponymous hero turned his family in for execution). They're little angels compared to the positively terrifying Sisters of Obedience who are running what is essentially a child abuse and slavery racket. Some people of faith escape his scorn but not many. To those who complain Pullman is anti-Religion I say "you're definitely on to something." If it bothers you, you may want to avoid him. In addition to Organized Evil (religion), there is just plain wickedness, personified in the wonderfully smarmy and grotesque character of Gerard Bonneville complete with a leg-gnawing hyena daemon. A former professor and full-time pervert they share some of the creepiest and therefore most gripping scenes.La Belle Sauvage starts off rather slowly introducing new characters, providing backstory to the main character, Malcolm Polstead and his coterie of friends and newly made enemies. Malcolm reminds one of the adage "still waters run deep" and like Lyra and Will Parry he is young enough to be naive but a bit reckless in his bravery; not classically educated but instinctively intelligent, and always curious. He and his daemon Asta (who hasn't settled into a single form yet) create a character whose depth and humanity is surprising in one so young but entirely believable. He and his motley crew--the scholar Hannah Relf, Gyptian Coram von Texel and Alice the kitchen maid are a formidable force for Good. Their first priority is to save Lyra from the clutches of the Church and her vicious mother. When the flood hits, the action rises with the waters. La Belle Sauvage kicks into a higher gear.So why not 5 Stars? Frankly, The first book lacks the poetry of His Dark Materials, a brilliant riff on Milton's Paradise Lost. There are no gay angels falling in love or Serafina Pekkalas bashing about on a "broom" of pine branches, no Subtle Knives, peculiar Texans or talking polar bears with a drinking problem dressed in armor. La Belle Sauvage is very Sauvage but not so Belle. Compared to the first trilogy The Book of Dust seemed prosaic. In fact, Malcolm resembles Will a bit too much; one could swap out Coram for John Faa. The Book of Dust feels comfortable rather than electric. That's not to say it isn't entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. It is, however a bit of disappointment. I was hoping for more spark and inventiveness, not the occasional shiver. However, I am very glad the author has revisited his finest creation. I will be waiting in line, eager to read books 2 and 3. So too should you.

I feel a quiet smile spread over my face every time I page through this playful book. The text replaces ideas of mindfulness, presence, enlightenment, emptiness, and joy (to name a few) with one simple word: bunniness. It sounds so silly, but it really works and it'll give you a chuckle. I find that reading "bunniness" in the place of some of the aforementioned, somewhat heavy terms creates a lightheartedness that leaves me open and receptive to whatever adage is being presented. In other words, this book is just a whole lot of fun. It definitely brings some cheer and the sillies, and it seems like the author had so much fun making it.

Filled with such sweet and surprisingly wise adages and bits of wisdom! I bought it for my sister because we are both recovering from an abusive childhood that left us very stressed and she LOVES bunnies, but I think I might even buy one for myself now even though I am more of a bird fan because the quotes are so darn cute and actually really quite effectively helpful.

I use this to "enlighten" my kids.To be fair, you could get an adult book with one-liners.But I think casting some of these insights to a bunny analogy iseffective.

Pearls of wisdom, such as, "a potato is a potato, no matter how much I want it to be a carrot" and "when the bunny is ready, bunniness will appear."A fun take on some of the enduring wisdom of buddhism.

This is so cute. It’s the perfect gift for some bunny who loves bunnies

I love this book and read it on my phone frequently. I have given the Kindle edition via email as gifts, which is always a big hit!

I really enjoyed reading this book. Lots of sweet sayings and thoughts. The artwork is simple but delightful. I find myself picking up the book anytime I just need to relax and smile. There are about 3 saying/thoughts per page.

Could be Christian right out of the church fathers...gentle wisdom delivered in the light of the heart not the brain. Sweet. I keep a copy on my kindle and have purchased at least 4 times as gifts.

Review

From the reviews of the second edition:“This scholarly, well-thought-out book is a treasure trove of information on reconstructive surgery for nasal defects. … Nasal rebuilding requires surgeons to have both surgical and artistic skills. Even for experienced surgeons, nasal reconstruction can be a challenge. Surgeons, students, and residents in either plastic or ENT surgery will appreciate this book. … This is a meticulously crafted and thoroughly enlightening book and atlas for nasal reconstructive surgeons.” (Jeffrey S. The best nasal recon book on the market - period.

The pictures and DVD clarified the issues I had and fulfill all expectations.

It is a great book, I had the chance to read it. It takes you step by step guiding you through nasal reconstruction from the basic etiology through a detailed illustrated technique of surgery. Until now there is no other book in the field that is detailed as much, and clear enough for both the beginners and the profissionals in reconstructive surgery. I believe that it's the Bible of nasal reconstruction. A must have book. I was really happy when I found it on Amazon. But I didn't recieve this item till now, it has been more than 40 days since I placed my order and it seems they don't have it in stock, and yet they state that they have it. I wonder why they advertise it if the publisher is out of stock.03/25/06within the last 10 days the price of this book fluctuated markedly between $245 in Fab 06 to $1380 and now it is $680. Either the system is not working proberly or they don't actually know what they are doing.

#1,267 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Overall, this was a very nice read. The characters are well-thought out and you really want to see how their relationship develops and if their love blossoms. The author deals nicely with the social history of the era, introducing appropriate social conventions and assumptions and then playing on them and what is deemed "proper" throughout the book. The cons for me were that the book was a bit verbose in some areas, some of the foreshadowing was both heavy-handed and drawn out, and the book contained some stilted/unnatural conversations and inner dialogues of the characters (I understand they were having deliberately awkward relations at points within the book, but some of the language just seemed unrealistic/unnatural). Also, the title is a bit misleading; while she is certainly a reluctant duchess, I fear "firey" is a much too potent word to describe the love they share - more like "respectful and deep". Overall, a very good story with well-defined characters, good plot development with a fair amount of twists/turns/bumps in the road - I enjoyed it and would read more from Fanny Finch.

I enjoyed reading this story. It's about a most unlikely marriage between a nobleman and a commoner. A marriage of convenience for both, as much as Thea was against it. Joseph's mother made a demand that he marry within a week after the season started. His fabric merchant was scraping by to support his wife and 5 children. They struck a deal; he would marry his oldest, Thea, thereby supporting her family and he would spite his mother by marrying "below his station." It does have a HEA with an extended epilogue occurring 1 yr after the marriage. Although I became weary of Thea's distrust again and again and skimmed a few pages of repetition, the book is very much worth reading if you're a fan of historical romances.I received an ARC of this book. This is my voluntary review. Thanks Fanny!

A Fiery Love for the Reluctant Duke is an interesting clean historical romance about finding love in an arranged marriage set up for all the wrong reasons. The story is entertaining, even though it is a little slow. I think it could have benefitted from the characters being less stilted and more physical beings. Their behavior towards each other was more what one would have expected from a couple courting than a married couple living in the same house. Keeping things platonic is one thing, but these two are nervous about holding hands.I’d recommend this book to fans of clean Regency romances.

Thea didn't want to marry. Her father was a merchant so it was unlikely that Thea and her two sisters would find suitable husbands. However, her father took his fabric samples to the Duke's new home so he could choose. Then, he invited the Duke to dine with his family. After that, he and the Duke decided it would be beneficial to both families if Thea and the Duke were to marry. Thea was unhappy with this and knew the ton would look down on her since her family was poor. Will this marriage between two people who didn't know each other and didn't want this marriage work? This is a lovely, sweet love story.

Quite an intriguing story about two people one hoping for a marriage of convenience and the other hoping to find love. Their journey through trials of being accepted was very trying to Thea who was really from a working class family. Being married to a duke wasn't easy for her, because she wasn't accepted by his class. The love of money being the root of all evil was a real changing point when she witnessed the changes it brought about in her family. It was quite silly the way they went about accusing each other for things that were unfounded.

Thea Caulfield is dismayed when she learns her father had made a deal with the Duke of Sandon for her hand in marriage. Now she is married to a man she doesn't love. The Duke of Sandon made a decision on impulse out of spite for his overbearing mother. Now he is married to a beautiful woman who doesn't love him. Can he show his wife how much he loves her? Can he get his wife to fall in love with him? Can Thea find love with her impulsive husband? Does she really want to love her husband? This is a clean and sweet romance.

As much as I always enjoy this authors historical romances, I was not fond of the beginning of this one. The Duke seemed too shallow and weak and Thea too petulant and unnecessarily critical. I'm glad I kept reading because the characters developed and the storyline was much more interesting after the first few chapters. It turned into a lovely romance and I especially liked the extended epilogue offered at the end of the book. I would like to see the epilogue lead into another book.

This is an unusual story as the bride really disliked her groom and pretty much set out to make his life as miserable as she was. However as time went on she has a change of heart and after all her complaining she begins to see the value of this man and how much she comes to love him. I almost gave up on them but am happy to say things worked out well in the end. A good tale with good and bad people and events which shaped their lives. You'll like I a lot!

#257,403 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

It was just a couple of weeks ago that I went back to visit some of the wisest friends I know, the 4500+ year old Bristlecone Pine trees in California. I had met them a few years earlier, they had comforted me after a death in my immediate family by giving me some perspective. A short while later, I quit my job to travel the world for a couple of years. On that go round, I also visited a grove of tall trees in Redwood National Park - which had some former world record holders. I thought I had seen it all. The oldest, tallest, and in 1997, I had visited General Sherman - the largest (In volume). All of these are noted in the book with glorious photos.Boy, was I wrong. I recently discovered another tree of distinction, also while in California. A moreton bay fig tree with a crown of 100+ feet, 75 feet tall. Magnificent. I've started to look at registers of trees, and then I found this book.I've begun to realize there are so many more trees of distinction, and not just the ones he mentions. The author has helped open up my eyes to seeing the world in another different way. His prose, descriptions, and inclusion of historical photos makes for an enjoyable read. I like to repeat - "The true voyage of discovery, is not in going to new places, but in seeing with new eyes." - Proust. The author has succeeded in having that effect on me.He finds glorious trees in Botswana, Madagascar, Morocco, South Africa / Japan, Sri Lanka, Turkey / France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden / Canada, USA, Mexico / Australia, and New Zealand.I've had the fortune of visiting 10 of these countries in my life, but other than what I noted earlier, didn't particularly make an effort to seek other trees out. I will now. My list of reasons to travel and re-visit some places is growing. Thank you Mr.Pakenham.I'm back in the Northwest US now - home of many trees, as I drive or bicycle I pay much closer attention to the friendly giants all around. I'm sure I'll lie down under one of them soon and have that daydream.

This was my 6th purchase of this book. I have one and have given the others as gifts. Remarkable Trees is a book well named. The beauty and longevity of these trees is inspiring. Despite all the environmental and human onslaught throughout the centuries, they survive. I appreciate that the author captured so many of these trees in this book. It's a beautiful gift for anyone who loves trees or anyone you wish to introduce to the world's diversity of of these life giving survivors.

If you are trying to give a gift to someone who you really like, this book would be ideal - It's that good.Briefly, this is a book of photographs of 60 trees scattered throughout the world that appeal to the author in some way. The photos are excellent and if you have ever tried to photograph a tree you will appreciate the thought and hard work that went into this book. The author includes photos of the biggest, the oldest, the holiest, and the oddest trees in the world. Ruminating about why he chose these particular trees is as fun as viewing the photos and text. Each photo is accompanied by well-written text that fleshes out the photos with historical, biological, or cultural information regarding each tree and its setting.I found myself lost in time and space as I read this book and looked at the trees - which is probably what the author intended and why he calls these trees "remarkable".The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because I read it after I had read Pakenham's first book, "Meetings With Remarkable Trees", which is even richer and better. I'm no tree-hugger but after reading these books I could be tempted.

When I bought Pakenham's precursor to this book ("Meetings With Remarkable Trees"), I was astonished then. Now I've run out of superlatives, hence the plus sign suffixing the title of my review. As enjoyable as his poetic writing style is, that's just a bonus. The highly detailed photos in this book are, well, astonishing+. He uses a heavy, large-format camera, lugging it all around the world to photograph some of the most amazing trees on the planet. And as fine as the print quality was in "Meeting With Remarkable Trees", the print quality of this book surpasses the former. I am constantly amazed at the print quality of the best books being printed today, and this is right up there at the top of the heap. You'll swear you're looking at fine, lithographic prints. I am a fanatic tree lover to begin with, and this book is just glorious, and satisfies my wildest dreams for such a book. It gives me a sense of ecstasy over being alive.

A great followup to Meetings with Remarkable Trees, which I have had since it first came out years ago. Thomas Pakenham deserves a Nobel prize for his work on trees! Of course, you'll find your favorite tree that you'd want to be in here but it isn't. Nonetheless, this is a classic.

bought this book for me......beautiful book, has provided me with many pleasant hours...

This is not a book only for tree enthusiasts, it is for everyone and I hope that everyone, everywhere will buy this book and be enriched by it. It is a blend of richly beautiful photogrophy with insightful and haunting narrative. The trees themselves come alive, sometimes as dieties. The stories behind these particular trees left me with a sense of affection for these remarkable beings.I remember reading a review and wondering what the fuss was all about. But there is much to fuss about. I know we are not to comment on other reviewers, but I must break the rules here. The reviews of this book are by far the most eloquent and beautiful I have come across. Usually there is some crank in the bunch who has awful things to say about a really good book. Not so here. It is as thought the sublime spiritual nature of the subject and the presentation brought out the best in everyone.

Oh so lovely, God has given us a treasure in our gracious, amazing trees and the author has paid his homage through the lens and pen!!
