If you were adopted, abandoned, neglected, rejected as a child...this is a most remarkable CDs program to listen to. I had it before years ago. I lost one of the CDs and so I recently bought it again. The author gets it. And the stories she tells support how we feel.I find it most comforting (now that I have listened while awake.... to listen to it while I go to sleep. I am an insomniac. This helps. It is VERY soothing. I would recommend it to people who went through it and to therapists who have no firsthand experience being a child who has suffered. God Bless the author. She also has other titles.

I really enjoy Pinkola-Estes work. She has a way of cutting to the heart of matters in a compassionate and enlightening way. I've listened to several of her series, and they are wonderful. I didn't find this one was insightful as others that she's done. Without question it's the best, most honest assessment of adult survivors of childhood abuse. She tells the story of the abused child without sentiment of sympathy. Rather, she shows total empathy and strength. I took a couple of insightful revelations from it, and for those listening to this series was worth it. I highly recommend this work for anyone who has survived child abuse, or is helping a child cope with such in the present.

Clarissa Pinkola Estes is my favorite author, especially "Women Who Runs with the Wolves." I also love her cds & this is one that I identify with the most. No one wants to dog around, let alone make him a part of the family. The dog is so weary and feels so alone. He then sees a house at the end of the rail road tracks that has a light burning within. He says to himself in despair This is the last house that I will try. He scratches the door, and it opens. The house is filled with children that were having a birthday party, and they squeal in delight at the presence of the dog--thinking that he was a birthday present.Oh, to be received as if you were a present instead of a scourge or a nuisance!Since all elements of a story/myth are within, and parts, of ourselves, it comes back to becoming your own Mother. Your own welcoming party. Your own celebration. Your own guide, comforter, and nurturer.If you have an internal wounded, abandoned, orphaned, or neglected child, realize that you can "grow your own Mother" inside. A partially burned piece of wood always has an ember inside, waiting for a wind to blow on it and coax it to become a flame once again. There is a part of you that can Mother--the child within. When we turn to our inner child, nurturing it and loving it, we heal the child, the inner Mother, and the other parts of ourselves, as well. One of the words for God in the Old Testament is El Shaddai, and in the Hebrew, this is a feminine word that literally means "Many-breasted One". There is a Mother heart of God, not matter which way you choose to connect with this Source or Divinity--or what you choose to call it. Something beyond us that is loving, nurturing, caring, and safe.

I had to put this one down a couple of times. Not because I disagreed with it but because it was so profound and I needed to fully comprehend how important the points where. Be prepared to have your spiritual life change as a result of reading this book. I can't recommend it enough.

This book is intense. If you have never read anything on Purgatory then please don't start with this book. This book is geared more for Catholics who are already praying for the poor souls in Purgatory. If you are looking for a book that deals more with how scripture supports the existence of Purgatory, I might suggest you read the "Biblical Basis for Purgatory" by John Salza. If you have never read anything about Purgatory and have lots of questions about it, I suggest reading "Get Us Out of Here" by Nicky Eltz and Maria Simma. After you have read those books or other ones then read this one.This book wakes you up about the pains of Purgatory. The author has compiled numerous I witness accounts from the lives of the holy saints and other creditable sources to show the details, the location, the amount of time one can spend there, the terrible pains, the physical evidence that poor souls have left behind, what we can do to avoid it, and how we can provide relief to the poor souls in Purgatory. These souls know they are saved and choose to be purified there rather than be blemished in the presence of God. (See Hebrews 12:1-29 and Rev 21:27)I strongly recommend reading this book as it will make your prayers and devotion to our Lord Jesus more fervent. God Bless!

Covers the teachings on Purgatory as well as how greatly we benefit from helping souls there. We have no idea how much souls suffer there, and they are often quickly forgotten at death. The book explains how to help them, with story after story on how the saints have done so. Christianity is a team sport, and we work together, we on earth praying for them and they in Purgatory praying for us. The stories are magnificent and very inspiring. Couldn’t put the book down. On my short list of spiritual reading favorites. Biblical quotes throughout.

This is a very comprehensive look at the apparitions of various Saints whose visions of Purgatory are explained, and the book also provides insights as to where Purgatory is and the various levels of Purgatory. There is also much reading about devotions on behalf of the Holy Souls. The author also details the ways we can employ to lessen our Purgatory or avoid it completely, all of which are within our reach. I would recommend this book.

This is the best book on Purgatory that I have ever read. I bought this book in the early 1970's and then passed it on to someone else because it was so good. Years later, in the early 2000's I bought another copy to read it again. Now, I have purchased an ebook copy. It is so enlightening! If I could, I would give it a 10-Star rating.

Everyone should read this. We all have the tendency to make light of the justice of God and the value of little things

Francis X. Schoupe, S.J., a renowned French Jesuit expounds eloquently on the necessity of Purgatory. Please study this book carefully because it stresses an important aspect of the afterlife that is often overlooked. This book reads wonderfully. It has helped underscore my staunch faith in the Catholic Church of which I am a proud member.

He is the author of eighteen books.Dennis Carey is Vice Chairman of Korn/Ferry International. An important contribution to how boards should function. Most boards don't see themselves as organizational leaders. They see themselves as monitors and guardians, except when they have to change the CEO. This book contributes to breaking that mindset. Boards lead certain functions, partner on others, and need to stay out of the "no-fly zones" reserved for management. But where, when, and how? Rich with many examples, stories, and detailed checklists, "Boards That Lead" provides the answers.The book is light on the multi-stakerholder model, the importance of culture including ethics and integrity, and how to break the cycles of short-termism and excessive CEO compensation, otherwise I would have rated it higher. Worth your time if you are serious about creating more effective boards.

As someone who does consulting on effective Board of Directors, I found this to be a very helpful book. I read a ton of books on this subject, and have also read many (if not all) of Ram Charan's books and I found this to be among the best. Clearly written, excellent information and ideas, things that I found useful and applicable – which you don't always find in every business book. If you work with a Board of Directors – or serve on one – this is a book you should read.

I highly recommend this book not only for board members and prospective board members but also for senior corporate executives and potential investors. The case studies (entertaining and often based on the authors' first hand experiences) provide valuable insights on topics such as "spotting, catching, or exiting a failing CEO", "recruiting directors who build value" and "staying out of the way". The authors' argue that today's boards have an increasingly important role as part of the leadership team in partnership with management in addition to their traditional governance role. But this book is far more than a set of best practices for the boards of America's largest companies. The authors' also provide an invaluable set of Director's Checklists (such as checklist 1: "Board Leadership Decisions - when to take charge, when to partner and when to stay out of the way", and checklist #10: "Is The Board Ready To Lead, Not Just Monitor, The Company". These checklists are thought provoking and invaluable.

Being on 4 company boards, I can relate to many of the issues and opportunities outlined in the book. The principles and practices presented both make the work of being a director more interesting and fulfilling, and give shareholders a way better " bang for the buck" from the board. It also reduces the naturally imperial tendencies of many CEO's, surrounded by their acolytes, and well paid advisors.

Well written in a typical Ram Charan style. I enjoyed reading it, and picked critical lessons as a board member. The insights on the latest challenges and skills sets for boards was helpful. This book reassures board about their fundamental mandate to lead. I have read many books of Ram, this is one of his good ones.

For starters, Lloyd-Jones considered the experience of baptism with the Holy Spirit, as described in the book of Acts, to be both available and desirable for Christians today. That is a major departure from the standard Reformed position that the occurrences in Acts were one-off, once for all experiences that were not intended for and should not be desired by believers today. The book of Acts, they say, is "descriptive, not prescriptive" meaning that it describes unique circumstances in the first century church and does not establish any regulatory or normative principles for subsequent believers.To the extent baptism with the Holy Spirit is recognized at all, it is subsumed within one's initial conversion, and is decidedly non-experiential. John MacArthur speaks for many Reformed leaders when he writes, "Each of us possesses the entire Holy Spirit from the time we repent and believe" and "Holy Spirit baptism is not an extra experience you need to seek; it is something you have from the moment you are saved." But that is not how Lloyd-Jones saw it. He wrote, "what is established beyond any doubt is that one can be a believer without being baptized by the Holy Spirit." (31.) As for the John MacArthurs who equate Spirit baptism with regeneration, Lloyd-Jones said that they "seem to me not only to be denying the New Testament but to be definitely quenching the Spirit." (141.)Lloyd-Jones repeatedly points out the wide disparity between the Christian life as seen in the New Testament and the Christianity promoted and practiced by a large segment of the church today: "[W]e look at the new Testament church, we see this amazing life that was in it - this power, this joy, this abandon, this thrill, and we ask ourselves, 'Are we like that?' We then read the subsequent history of the church and ... [w]e see that there have been periods in the church like this present era when the church has been weak and lethargic and ineffective." (199.) Many, if not most, in the church today "cannot say that they rejoice in Him 'with a joy unspeakable and full of glory.'" (183.)The current state of affairs is largely blamed on church leaders who interpret the New Testament through the reductionist lens of their own limited experience and, consequently, "reduce everything to the ordinary." (18, 74). Without delving into philosophies of knowledge and epistemology, Lloyd-Jones exposes the real problem as an Enlightenment era rationalism that now permeates much of Protestant theology. Modernism might be dead everywhere else, but it is alive and well in mainline Reformed churches.No one mixed more philosophic rationalism into today's Christianity than Reformed philosopher Gordon Clark who substituted "Logic" for the Logos in John, Chapter 1, and read the opening verse as: "In the beginning was Logic, and Logic was with God, and Logic was God." Clarkian apologist John Robbins of the Trinity Foundation took this rationalism about as far as one could go with statements such as "truth always comes from propositions" and "the mind of God, that is, God himself, is propositional." If God is essentially logic and propositions, then the rational understanding of propositions becomes the ultimate spiritual experience.While Clark and Robbins are at the extreme, the reduction of spiritual knowledge and spiritual life to logic, propositions and dogma is widespread. But mere orthodoxy is not enough. "It is not enough for us as Christian people to make sure that we are orthodox and to bemoan the statements that are made in the name of Christ that are denials of the Scriptural teaching. ... Are we - let us ask it again - are we rejoicing in the Lord Jesus Christ with a joy which is unspeakable and full of glory?" (231.)Spiritual life, spiritual reality and unspeakable joy are described by, but are not found within, the propositional statements of Scripture. They come from Jesus himself: "You search the Scriptures thinking that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life." John 5:39-40. Commenting on this passage, Charles Spurgeon added, "You stop short at the Scriptures, and therefore short of eternal life."Aside from giving the Rationalists a good poke in the eye, Lloyd-Jones recounts dozens of personal testimonies from prominent Christians throughout the ages who received direct, immediate, divine illumination of spiritual reality and who gave witness to their own rejoicing with joy unspeakable and full of glory. My one critique of Lloyd-Jones here is that while these witnesses recognized the Holy Spirit as active in their experiences, many did not attribute the experience specifically to "baptism with the Holy Spirit" as Lloyd-Jones does. Some of these witnesses were superb theologians and philosophers, such as John Owen and Jonathan Edwards, who placed their experiences within the context of a well-developed epistemology, theology and biblical exegesis. By lifting the experiences out of that context and linking them all to his own particular view of baptism with the Holy Spirit, Lloyd-Jones does something of a disservice to the works of these great thinkers and believers.Moreover, as Lloyd-Jones himself acknowledged, the desire and search for spiritual experience can be fraught with personal and communal dangers. Owen and Edwards took pains to identify those dangers and to mark out the narrow path that leads to life. With that caveat, I recommend this book.

I am extremely happy that I bought and own this book. It's a good buy, with over 450 pages, and it seems to consist of twenty four sermons that Lloyd-Jones preached on the subject of The Baptism with the Holy Spirit. I say this because Lloyd-Jones died in 1981, but this book is copyrighted in 1984 by Lloyd-Jones' wife. Also, his grandson is the editor, and he also wrote an introduction.In spite of the fact that this may be transcripts of sermons, it is very well written and easy to read and understand. So either the editor did a marvelous job, or Lloyd-Jones wrote out his sermons in addition to preaching them.Now to content. I was for many years a member of a traditional Pentecostal church, and we were taught that the Baptism with the Holy Spirit was an event separate and usually subsequent to salvation and was always accompanied by speaking in tongues. After many years under this teaching, and being very well schooled in the arguments to back up the traditional Pentecostal teaching, a series of events of a very negative nature shook my faith in this type of church and caused me to almost "start over" in my Christian education. Through this journey, I studied the teachings of many non-Pentecostal preachers, teachers, and authors. One of my favorite teachers and authors is John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in California, who radio ministry is called "Grace to You." He is extremely prolific and a wonderful, thorough, and uncompromisingly scriptural teacher of the Bible.Well John MacArthur wrote a book entitled "Charismatic Chaos" in which he gives a very good presentation of his positions: 1) that "miracle gifts," [speaking in tongues, interpretation of tongues, miracles, healings] ceased even before the end of the Apostle Paul's ministry and life and 2) that the Baptism with the Holy Spirit occurs now concurrent with salvation. In the early church, it came it stages, but MacArthur gives his reasons for that, and he does a really good job. Based on his book, I stopped praying in tongues, and became even more suspicious of people who say "The Lord told me . . . ." and who want to give me prophesies or operate in other "spiritual gifts." Still, I was not convinced that John MacArthur had the whole story, because I have not seen anything in the church during my lifetime that has come close to the Book of Acts. And I don't see anything in the Bible that says the church today should be different from then.Now MacArthur also claims that Martin Lloyd-Jones is one of his "heroes." He uses quotes from him in his MacArthur commentaries. So when I discovered that Lloyd-Jones was a Calvinist (or Reformed) theologian, AND he believes that the Baptism with the Holy Spirit occurs separate and generally subsequent to salvation and that all the gifts of the Spirit can occur today, well this book was for me a "must."And I am not disappointed. Lloyd-Jones gives his exegesis that the Baptism with the Holy Spirit occurs separate from salvation, it does not require speaking with tongues, it does not require accompaniment by any manifestation of the Spirit or any particular gift, it is not equivalent with sanctification, that gifts of the spirit or "manifestations" can be counterfeited, that there are many reasons to be cautious about manifestations, and much, much more. There are twenty-four chapters and twenty-four topics, and I have enjoyed them all. I especially appreciate the chapters showing that we have to be cautious when people claim that they have gifts of the Spirit.Do I now have all the answers? No, not at all. In fact, I may have more questions than ever, but I believe that my love for, and knowledge of, Scripture is greater than ever. And so I'll keep on studying and searching and reading and researching, and I believe I'll get the answers eventually.Finally, I am asking God to grant me the Baptism with the Holy Spirit as Lloyd-Jones defines and describes it, so I would have to say I found his presentation very persuasive.

I must admit that when I first read this book, I was far too much on the side of many of those in the reformed tradition. While I hold to reformed theology and am grateful to God for opening my eyes to the importance of sound teaching and the doctrines of grace, I believe that apprehension and fear have hindered many from seeing that the Holy Spirit operates experientially as well as working objectively in our sanctification. There definitely is something to be said about experiencing a rich joy and overwhelming sense of peace that I hadn't experienced at my conversion. As for the gifts of the Spirit, I have never spoken in tongues or experienced any visible "extraordinary gifts', but I'm not closed to the possibility as some are. There has certainly been much fanaticism and extremely bizarre behavior from many in the charismatic movement, but Lloyd Jones makes it clear that the Holy Spirit is sovereign and also that the believer is never out of control if they are truly under the Spirit's influence. I suggest reading this book in a prayerful spirit and with a mind that is not closed or restrictive. As for me, I still respect teachers on both sides of this subject, but always seek to be balanced in my judgement.

I gave this book four stars because I didn't agree with some of the exegesis that Lloyd-Jones gives in support of his opinion that the bapitsm of the Holy Spirit is a separate work than regeneration. Still, I appreciate his exegesis as a whole, and thought he made strong points, especially in his many mentions Christians throughout history that have experienced an extraordinary relationship with God. This book inspired me to seek God and to seek being filled with the Holy Spirit, even though I might not call such a falling the baptism of the Spirit like Lloyd-Jones would.

A friend suggested that I check out the Hourly History books as they're short books about things that have happened in history that you can read in an hour or less....That's probably pretty obvious already.I decided to read the Crusades first as it caught my attention.50 pages may seem too short to do the history of the Crusades justice, but they pack a LOT of information in those 50 pages. So much so that I felt lost more than once; I think you have to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of what the Crusades are to understand everything.I do have to admit that I was bored a time or two, but I will be checking out more of the Hourly History books.

Perfectly summed up in the quotation: '....most durable monument of human folly...'.Over 200 years of futile expense, fighting and deaths to achieve absolutely nothing …. all in the name of religion.I was not previously aware of Egypt being involved.Would have liked to know more about how so many soldiers moved such great distances, the logistics involved and how long it took.The back and forth movements of armies, changes in leaders and so many names thown into the mix made for confusing reading at times.

A refresher course in an hour - what a good idea! There are so many topics about which I would like to know a bit more without spending too much time on details. It is just my inquisitive nature, I suppose. I am glad to have discovered a series of books that serve my need for a "quick dip."I studied the Crusades at school years ago and have since seen many Hollywood versions, of course. It was good, however, to review the subject in this way. I intend to use these books quite often.

The Crusades appear to be a dark time in history with terrible brutality on both sides. All we usually hear is that "Christians" should feel guilty for it, when there were many more guilty of disastrous plans and decisions . i appreciated the author's balanced and factual approach. We study history to try to understand our world today . Thank you for these very readable and fascinating books.

Quick history through the various crusades. I didn't realize how many there were. Good reading to understand why this region has the issues it has.

I enjoyed this book. It gives a good history of the what was happening in the world during this period.Worth the effort to read.
