I had already read and reviewed “The Day We Found the Universe” by Marcia Bartusiak and I concluded the reviewed by saying that I would like to read more of her books. I was not disappointed in her latest offering, “Dispatches from Planet 3”. The book isn't just a history of astronomy, it's also a story about astronomers, many of whom are unjustifiably lesser known such as Jane Luu, Beatrice Tinsley, and Margaret Burbidge. It's not so much a book as a collection of essays but it reads seamlessly. Bartusiak writes in a conversational way and engages the reader. She has a good sense of humor and explains the science very clearly. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in science.Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley for review purposes.

A clever and concise overview of some of the major points in the history of astronomy, broken down into easily digestible chunks, perfect for the reader to dip into when they have a few minutes to spare. The topics covered are diverse, ranging from the reclassification of Pluto to the proof that there was once water on Mars, but in each essay the science is clearly laid out and easy to understand, I was particularly surprised to discover the numerous notable contributions from women in the field and liked that the author did her best to shine a light on some almost forgotten names, as well as the more obvious leaders in the subject.

This book has changed me more than anything else I've ever read. I have learned to accept my ordinariness as God's will and stop thinking something is wrong with me for not making some impact on the community. Fr. de Caussade helped me to understand that I actually don't know what I may be contributing, or even if God is asking me to contribute all of the time. I feel I can wait with inner peace for God's prompts when/if he wants me to do something and just to live ordinary life in love - treating everyone and every circumstance as the expression of God that it is.I read this with a dear friend. She has been changed in different ways; her issues were different from mine. But we both agree that we have moved deeply into the abandonment to the will of God that we have both wanted from reading this book.Don't be surprised if you intend to read a chapter at a sitting but have to stop for the day because what you've read needs time to sink in. What Fr. de Caussade wrote with catch your breath sometimes and the realization and understanding you move into are so astonishing, you just can't continue reading until later.

This book really pricks the ego...my prideful heart did not want to continue reading...however it is a wonderful display of God's will for my life...highly recommend reading this book but rest assured it hurts considerably

John Beevers uses the modern idiom to get across the ideas that Jean Pierre de Caussade offered to his friends for their comfort and holiness in finding God in all things. It takes a modern Jesuit to bring into the present moment the lessons of an 18th Century Jesuit who went beyond religion to help the Religious understand what their religion had taught them. While there are many presentations and formats of the "Classic" English language translation done and introduced by Dom Arnold, O.S.B. in 1921, all of these variations are dry, academic, and tedious compared to John Beevers' American rendition. N.B. at this time, there is NO E-Text or Kindle version of Beever's unique work. All of the public domain stuff is the awkward, 1921 translation with different covers and window dressing. Even the Amazon Kindle version linked to this Beevers BOOK is not the genuine Beevers text. So beware! You have to buy the physical IMAGE book to get the genuine article and Amazon sells it.Now then, you will not be disappointed by purchasing a paper book. Nor will you suffer technological inconvenience by having to actually hold a real book in your hands and use an old fashioned book mark to hold your place. Beevers is the real deal in both style and insight and he follows on from Anthony de Mello's WAY TO LOVE in being an easy read and a friendly guide. In fact, De Mello and all of the well written books on spirituality you have enjoyed up until now, have brought you to the present moment, WHERE YOU ARE NOW ABOUT TO ENCOUNTER THIS LITTLE GEM OF A BOOK!There is a caveat, however. This is not a book for exploration or casual inquiry. This is serious spirituality for the latter part of your life (no matter when it begins). If you have not yet "made" the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, it would be a good idea to do so. The "19th Annotation" for those of us who are busy, is a good introduction, and when you have finally arrived at the point where you are feeling overwhelmed at finding God in everything, this book, by John Beevers, S.J. is your next step. If you are at this stage, then no further explanation is either adequate or necessary.If you are here because of curiosity, you will probably be bitterly disappointed or even disillusioned. On the other hand, you might be caught up on the crest of Grace, whether or not you choose to admit it, and that being the case, you may proceed as far as you are carried. Do not however, make the mistake of reading a lesser (cheaper) version of the Abandonment to Divine Providence in order to get a "taste" of what the book offers. If you do and you become less than completely enthralled with the Sacrament of the Present Moment, the problem is most likely the translation. If you insist on continuing, scrape up the needed cash and buy the Image book. Then, prepare yourself prayerfully, trying to forget all the unpleasantness, and take the "easy" path that John Beevers has laid out for you.Dare I say, providentially, Amazon offers you the opportunity to read John Beevers' Introduction on line. A few minutes spent here will be most beneficial and should give you a good idea of what to expect.And now for the testimonial:Abandonment is true joy and peace. Yes, the Kingdom is most definitely here and now, and this particular publication is the best roadmap I have found in over seven decades of searching.So, give it a try. The book is under $10, and if it is not for you now, it will be someday.UPDATE: I just bought another copy - to give to a friend.UPDATE: I'm on my second reading and as a daily reader, it just keeps getting better.UPDATE: I'm now on my seventh reading. Each day I read passage and it is always new. Why is this? You figure it out. Best $10 I ever spent.April 6 2014, UPDATE:Well, I just read my original review with the intention of deleting the whole thing and leaving just a sentence or two and, so much for intentions. For what it is worth, here are my couple of sentences and the wordy review will have to stand as amended:I have just completed my 16th (count 'em SIXTEEN) reading of this book, the last 8 on my Kindle so that brings this up to date, and I am still learning by my daily readings. If you are reading this, there is a reason. To quote St. Francis, I have done what was mine to do, you must do what is yours. Nothing more need be said.

This is not an easy read, but it's a good one. I have to read a bit...think about it...and sometimes read again, but the insights are worth the effort.

This book has changed my life by teaching and persuading me to live in the present moment. This was the key to eliminating anxiet and fear in my life. The author teaches in such a simple way the path to holiness. It is exciting to unburden oneself from the burdens of the world which so often bring despondency and despair as well anxiety anout the past and f ear of the future.The only thing we own is the present moment where we can make a choice to think or act, or not to. The past is gone and the future is speculation. Fear is speculation about the future about something that will cause pain. This book is amazing and I highly recommend it. As a pancreatic cancer patient, I can only begin to express what this work is doing for me. I only wish I knew about this in my 20s.

An excellent resource for the serious minded reader who truly desires to become "all in" to God's purposes and will in their lives. Reading it with other likeminded sojourners or with the guidance of a spiritual director is advisable. This is not for speed reading but those who will chew on the words and truly seek to know God.

I love this book. I actually bought another copy after losing mine. It really makes you want to be closer to God. This book is great for contemplation. I read a section at a time and then pray. One warning is that this is not something you can read in a hurry.

Always a pleasure to see my friend Adrian Mole again. I've been an avid follower of Mole since the late eighties and these books never get old.

I loved the two first books of this series, but i really havent felt this way about the other ones. i dont know if is me or Adrian who grow up.

How this can be considered a funny book is quite beyond me. What a letdown! What a waste of money!

This addition to the Adrian Mole canon is entirely different from the first two books. This is not a diary, but as Sue Townsend writes in her ‘Author’s Preface’ – ‘This book is a collection of some of the articles and essays I have written over the years.’There are three parts – A variety of material supposedly by Adrian Mole; four essays by Townsend, and then a fictional diary, ‘The Secret Diary of Margaret Hilda Roberts Aged 141/2 and ‘Correspondence with a Queen in Waiting’ also by ‘Roberts.’Most of the material shows Townsend’s light satiric touch and some of it in Part Two as well.

The Mole section takes up the bulk of the book and covers a five-year period. It begins in December 1984, when he's 16years old and is studying for his A-Levels. (He's obviously been reasonably successful in his O-Levels and CSEs, then). However, it's a little different in style to the 'The Secret Diary' and 'The Growing Pains' - it's only partly written in diary format, and it also includes a spot of poetry, his talks given on radio and a couple of letters between Adrian and Barry Kent. (Barry is, for a spell, residing at Her Majesty's Pleasure and has now learnt how to read and write. He's now writing some poetry and - unlike the crap Adrian produces - it's actually quite promising. He's even known as Baz the Skinhead Poet in certain circles). Adrian is also still corresponding with his American penpal, Hamish Mancini - at one point, he has ask Hamish for the return of his diaries. While the book sees some big changes in Adrian 's life, some things have remain constant : he still enjoys reading 'The Beano', is still obsessed with the Norwegian Leather Industry and his love for Pandora Braithwaite. (Pandora, on the other hand, is possibly starting to catch herself about Adrian . Where Adrian deludes himself that he's an intellectual, Pandora is academically gifted...so, the pair's post A-Level life might just prove a little strained).The Sue Townsend and Margaret Roberts sections are much shorter than the Mole section - though the Sue Townsend section follows a similar format to what has come before. There's a diary from a two week holiday in Majorca, a brief report covering a trip to Russia with a group of other writers and a couple of pages on why she likes England. The Margaret Roberts slot, on the other hand, follows the 'traditional' Mole diary format. (While nothing is officially known of what happened to Ms Roberts, it can only be a coincidence that Margaret Thatcher's maiden name was Roberts). Our heroine is obscenely hard working at school and - like her father, a hard working grocer - she frowns upon socialists. (She particularly despises two disgusting working-class oiks called Ginger Shinnock and Roy Batterfree). She doesn't have many friends - only, really, a renegade boyfriend called Cecil Parkhurst - and she frowns upon Edwina Slurry, her main rival at school. (She also has some trouble with a horrible, working class cyclist with shifty eyes called Tebbit). While a fortune teller claims Margaret is going to be most powerful woman in the land, there is also trouble ahead.I've slightly mixed feelings about this book...more from Adrian Mole is always a good thing, but somehow cramming five years into half a book seems a bit of a waste. I also would have preferred another Adrian Mole diary - the change in style didn't really work so well for me. (The Margaret Roberts diary, on the other hand, I did enjoy a great deal). Strangely, it was Townsend's own section I liked the least, although I'm not entirely sure why...Recommended overall, but not in the same league as the first two Mole books.

I have bought and read all the books in the Adrian Mole series and I was dissappointed not to find anywhere to tell me which ones to get. I love the entire series and I just couldn't stop reading them all the way to the end. The one thing I might suggest is to keep in mind that with most series of books the first is always the best, which is probably the case here too, but if you like it and are a fan of Adrian Mole, there is no reason why you wouldn't want to read the rest.I like the fact that is it written in diary form for easy reading and it is very clever how the story is told from the point of view of Adrian himself but you can see things about his life that he cannot.Overall an excellent read for all ages from teen to adult.

I had the feeling, as I settled in to reading True Confessions of Adrian Albert Mole, that Sue Townsend had a number of ideas for sequences, but none of them quite fit into a full-length novel. Thus this entry. That's not a complaint, but the book is not entirely Adrian, and Adrian's sequences skip spaces of time.The book starts just about where the second one left off, and then segues into essays set up as radio broadcasts, permeated with Adrian's trademark self-delusion. Then Sue Townsend offers several pieces based on her own life, the most amusing being about her love of England. The final segment consists of a "newly-discovered" set of diary pages from one Margaret Hilda Roberts. The conceit is that they are undated, but are suspected to be from the early years of WWII. This is the weakest portion of the book, because Margaret is tremendously unlikeable and the writing lacks the humor that infuses Adrian's sequences.

This is a marvelous graphic novel about a summer in the life of author Mark Tatulli. As the title hints – he was short & skinny and resolved to end this situation. As many of us did in those days, we put some money in an envelope and sent it off in hope of a miracle. Unfortunately, all Mark got in return was a rubber strip, a Hercules wrist band of power, some gaggy powder to drink and lots of useless advice. A life lesson – of course.Mark’s dream is to be a cartoonist and 1977 is the year of Star Wars. A whole new world opened for him when he saw the movie. He immediately decided to do his own Stars Wars mockumentary so he starts story boarding it. His version will be called Star Bores. It will feature Fluke Skystumbler, obi-Dope Cantaloupe among others. The whole book is filled with crazy characters. He has 3 enemies, each fleshed out as only an animator and TV producer can do. They are horrid children who are intent to make Mark’s life miserable.The summer of 77 sums up the life of poor Mark as he stumbles through love, runs from bullies, swims with the losers but most of all works on his magnum opus – the Star Bores Movie. The book is full of subtle reference to the time. I was reminded of The Goldberg’s but this takes place a decade earlier but with the same charm of seeing it through a boy’s eyes. This book is so well done; it has attention to detail and a story line with will please both young and old. I love it.

As an adult who remembers being a kid in the 70's and seeing Star Wars for the first time (It was an incredible experience, wasn't it!) I really enjoyed this graphic novel memoir. Today's kids probably can't imagine a world without Star Wars or truly appreciate why it was so unique in its day but I believe they will relate to Mark's pain at not fitting in with the other kids. In his case, it was being too short and too skinny. Others may feel they are too tall, too big, too fat, or whatever. This book addresses that issue beautifully, without being heavy handed on the lesson. Readers will meet Mark's family, his friends, his crush and the bullies that occasionally make his life miserable. Follow Mark through the summer after his seventh grade year as he continues to be an underachiever on the swim team, goes on a family vacation, discovers Star Wars and tries out all the "short and skinny" cures from the back of his comic books. It's a fun read but heartwarming, too.

This graphic novel about to he author's own experiences as a beginning seventh grader in 1977 could not have been done better. I loved everything about this book from the exciting drawings to what a short and skinny boy with weak self body image to a very active imagination. He has three bullies to contend with. Also he is very embarrassed about his size. I felt for him, in seventh grade I was overweight and shy with a passion for books .Mark is the middle child, stuck between a big and strong older brother and a very athletic younger and bigger sister. The first day of school started off with a scoliosis exam. What a horrible surprise for him to have take off his shirt in front of the other boys. He does have crush on Lisa and he would like to impress her with the size and muscles that he does nor have. But his passion to be a cartoonist who writes with humor is key to his eventual success.

Short & Skinny is a graphic novel that I chose with my kids in mind. While I don't often read them, my children really like them. This novel is sort of autobiographical and I can tell the author put a lot of feeling into the tale. It's about his time in middle school when he is short and skinny and wants to change things so he's not such a target for bullies. He sees Star Wars when it comes out the theaters and has an idea to reinvent himself. He makes his own cartoon spin off of the movie and finds the confidence he had been searching for.I thought the panels were well illustrated in this book. It was quick to read, both for me and my kids. It's recommended for ages 8 and up and I think that is a good target. From my experience, reluctant readers in elementary school (including one of my own children) are more willing to read a graphic novel than one without illustrations. I think this would be a good option in those cases to ease a young reader into bigger books that have a combination of words and illustrations. It's also great for children who love to read and enjoy graphic novels along with chapter books.

This is an autobiographical comic about a summer the author was in middle school. His father worked in movie sets, he'd seen Star Wars that summer when it came out, and he'd gotten his friends to make a parody version. He had a camera probably because of his family working in film, and bought film with his money from a part time job.He also does middle school things. He is short and skinny, and buys a bunch of bulking up kits from the back of magazines because this will be the summer he bulks up, so he plans. These are mostly small quantities of protein shakes, flimsy workout equipment like large rubber bands that break fast, or workout plans. He also is interested in girls without talking to them, and deals with neighborhood kids including some same age as him bullies.The book covers just that summer between 7th and 8th grade. It's very much nostalgic and about the time period of the late 70s as well. The author still likes Star Wars now, and Star Wars and his parody version that he'd made in middle school, Star Bores is very much a topic of the book. It's also got humor. Many of the bulking up kits were painful let downs in middle school, but now funny for the author. I'd thought it was overly nostalgic, but I'm not the same age as the author, so your mileage may vary.Pics are a cartoon style similar to the cover. The whole book is black and white.

Every chapter in this workbook-sized book presents a different theme of poetry and then gives ideas that inspire teens to write their own poem. It is motivating and realistic. Teachers will find this book easy to use and will return to it time and again when they want to fire up their students' creative voice.

There are a lot of good ideas for integrating poetry into curriculum. The book has lesson ideas as well as examples. It is easy to implement.

Poems and discussion quesions are published together in chapters according to themes. Good for high school English. I like that I can copy the poems for the students. The writing exercises are also effective. This is the one poetry book I use.
