Greenland's Icy Fury is a lighthearted accounting of one of the least accessible and least known but most stunning parts of the globe - southeast Greenland - and its natural history, geography, geology, glaciers, and foremost, its savage weather and awesome climate. The Polar route to Europe afforded stepping stones for then-short-range aircraft, even though the landing fields were mere pinpoints in the wilderness, but hazardous flying conditions took a heavy toll of planes and airmen. This is a fascinating account of a little known aspect of world war II - tracking and predicting the weather that could make or break a military campaign in Europe, and the daily life of the men who spent a portion of the war in an isolated outpost in Greenland where some of those predictions were made. The author paints wonderful images of his time spent as part of this eclectic group of soldiers, each picked for a special skill that was needed for the group as a whole to live, work, and survive in the Greenland environment for over a year. Photographs also complement the descriptions. My only minor "complaint" about the book is that sometimes the author got a little too descriptive on the science of geology and weather, and from reading a book for it's historical perspective, wading through scientific detail detracted from the portion of the account I was most interested in.

This book is an absorbing account of the key role that Greenland played during World War II. As a military outpost, a group of men provided critical weather data to guide allied forces in their aerial assaults against the encroaching German military in northern Europe. The book is also an admiringly-told natural history and geology of the earth's largest icy island. The author, a highly respected geologist, waxes poetic about the incredible Greenland geology but also provides both a humorous and harrowing account of two years of a young man's life a frozen dramatic world. The stories include transportation via dog sleds and skiing amidst deep frozen cravasses, the interaction with the Inuit Eskimos, the intense blizzards that filled a room through a key hole, as well as a glimpse at the pre-global warming world of Greenland. Fascinating! Highly recommended.

(May even have turned a nice shade of azure)This series starts off with a bang as the two friends Wulf Rome and Quyloc are sent by King Rix on a mission destined to fail, to fight a massively overwhelming army and are driven into what is possibly the most dangerous piece of land anywhere… The Gur al Krin desert, where searing sands are the least of their troubles.The duo find themselves in the middle of the Krin in a deep place they’d rather not be and just being there might lead to the worst decision ever.Then there is Netra, a young Tender from Rane Haven who is just discovering who she is and how to manage her budding powers. This part of the story has a tidal feel to the emotional tumult throughout, but also has some good action to balance it out.This pentalogy deserves 5 stars, two thumbs up, a fanatics dance of merriment and all the praise I can muster…and a bag of chips (as the cool kids say) It’s blend of action, mayhem, interpersonal connections and raw emotion (had me crying like a baby in its crib) made for a potent cocktail that still has me reeling from the ‘whoa’ effect.I absolutely LOVE the imagery in this book, especially with the creatures. It’s as if they were painted directly into my brain! (don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt) So that goes a long way in transporting you right into the story.Eric T. Knight does something amazing in these books, in that even though you are reading them for the first time it feels like coming back to an old friend you haven’t seen in years and at the same time, packs the wonder and awe of a brand new adventure and all the mystery that entails, making it what I consider to be an instant classic that will endure for generations to come. And that's really just the first book I'm talking about, it gets BETTER!I need to take a minute to talk about the magic system he uses, because it's freakin' awesome and completely unique! As a fantasy fan I have honestly NEVER seen it’s like. Things like Lifesong, Selfsong, Akirma, Flows and going "beyond" have totally blown me away! The way he has taken fantasy and turned it upside down with his use of the above mentioned things is through originality and an obviously bottomless imagination!Eric T. Knight is a literary master Chef, knowing exactly the right ingredients to give you a five course gut busting meal that will leave you both extremely satisfied and wanting more.So between a crazy unique magic system, characters that I feel like I personally know now (don't worry about how many 'real' friends I have) unparalleled action and an amazing sense of humor throughout (seriously I laughed out loud so many times while reading this, I'm pretty sure my family thinks I may be a little psychotic. (my mental health is fine. The voices told me so) you can’t help but love these stories.Knight ends this EPIC 5 pack with Oblivion's Grasp and it is without a doubt the jewel in the crown of the Immortality and Chaos series and that means quite a bit, since I truly adore every page of every book in this set.I've honestly never read a series that can bring to life such realistic and wonderful characters as this one does. In it Eric T. Knight has fashioned heroes that are truly afraid of what could happen but they use that fear to push forward and that lends them a realism that most fantasy stories lack.Grab a copy and I'll see you on the other side of the veil.

The initial characters are shallow and you have no empathy for any of them. For a general, Rome comes off as a complete rookie - no decision making or intelligence. Netra is a bit better but is still one-dimensional.The religious magic system reminds me a bit of the dream world in wheel of time. Indeed, the whole evil god breaking out of prison and the early release of his minions seems mighty similar as well.I’m not understanding how other reviewers gave this 5 stars.

This wasn't one of my favorite series. Without spoiling the plot, it seemed like a whole section of the series was about a group that was only marginally connected to the story line, had a completely different resolution to their problem, and the final meeting of the two protagonists was almost an afterthought in the epilogue. Too many plot developments were encumbered by peripheral entities claiming "we can't interfere".I found myself about halfway through the books debating whether to abandon the series or finish it to see if it got better toward the end. The end was partially satisfying but I found myself wondering how some relationships ended, how the characters resolved their actions, and what happened with some major influencing entities. I don't know if this was in preparation for a continuation story, but I won't continue with the series to find out.

Too many of the 'good guys' were morally compromised by a 'the end justifies the means' mentality , and as a result their behavior was almost as bad as the evil monsters. I am pretty sure that some epiphany was coming that would enlighten them as to how far they had compromised their beliefs, but I am just too fed up with the annoying and self-serving justifications, to hang around for it. And they were cruel to animal. which even in fiction is a complete deal breaker for me.

I think the author's writing style improved greatly in his Chaos and Retribution series (which I read before I knew about Immortality and Chaos: The Complete Epic Pentalogy). This set is giving me a better idea of the background and the history/personality of some of the main characters in his Chaos and Retribution series. The reason that I like the author's next series better is that Eric Knight spends more time on the personalities of his main characters without decreasing the action packed events in the books. So, if you loved this set, I think that you'll love the continuation of the Qarath world even more in the Chaos and Retribution series

It is a story of magic and mystery of kings and soldiers, of good and evil, life versus death.This is a story of ancient gods and their creation called Life and Lifesong. And the Selfsong that inhabits every living creature. A story of how it was all very nearly destroyed. It is a story full of action/adventure and of undying love."Immortality and Chaos" is a great story that could be turned into a feature length film or a tv mini series. I would absolutely watch if it ever were.Great book series!!!

I've been reading this at night for the past month, and cannot wait to finsh it. I'm on the final straight, and let me tell you, I can't wait to see how it finishes.The plot take a while to get going, but this is purely because of the complexities involved in the storyline. Once the foundation is laid, the story picks up speed and hurtles toward the finish. The characters are well defined and the world around them detailed, and I had no problem picturing the story in my mind. The author must have had loads of fun taking the reader from one spot to another, and I love how I am taken from one character to the next over the chapters, inexorably drawn toward the finish line - not knowing what the end result is going to be!Overall then, well written, very detailed plot, and had me spellbound. I'm very glad I decided to read past the first few chapters, as this gem ihas been well worth my time.

Just a few words, on the outside chance that I might tip a potential reader or two into reading this marvelous oh-so-Russian novel of lives caught up in the Great October Revolution of 1917 and its aftermath. Either you read Big Russian Novels (primarily of the 19th century) or not. If you do, you've probably already read, or tried to read, Zhivago. If you don't, I can offer a few reasons why you might want to read this one, in the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation or the earlier, less literal (but reportedly more graceful and poetic) Hayward-Harari version. Pasternak's cast of principal characters are to a person layered, complex, deeply conceived individuals swept up in the massive surge of events, struggling to keep their heads above water while, all around them, friends, family, and nameless millions of others are drowning in the turbulence. The arc of Yuri Zhivago alone - from enthusiastic, humanistic supporter of "regime change" to mordant skeptic of divisive ideas imposed as orthodoxy-driven policy - is typical of the evolutions and surprises Pasternak has written into the novel. His characters ruminate far and wide over imputed glories and horrors of Marxism, Bolshevism, Soviet Communism, the New Economic Policy (NEP), etc., and it was for precisely these candid criticisms of Soviet ideology and practice that Pasternak's novel was condemned (although unpublished) in the USSR - despite the deStalinization still underway at the time of Zhivago's publication, first in Italy then around the world (Soviet readers couldn't legally purchase a USSR/Russian edition until 1988). Needless to say, Pasternak was obliged to decline the Nobel Prize for Literature he won in 1958, mostly for Doctor Zhivago.For me - I spent most of my adult life as an analyst of foreign political, economic, social, and military affairs - Doctor Zhivago is particularly brilliant in its depiction of the horrors and dislocations war and civil war inflict on populations, and especially those segments with little or no recourse to "safety nets" of any variety - personal, familial, governmental, church-, religion-, or community-based, or other. Pasternak depicts the range of human ingenuity in such circumstances, as individiuals cobble together the means of extracting brief moments of small pleasure from the tractor-pull of events. But through an accumulation of hundreds of small details, often in asides and parenthetic observations, Pasternak conveys the epochal common misfortunes and hardships of those whose accident of history made them Russians born around and after 1900. The novel compels us to consider that, at some point in the 20th century, such horrors of remorseless privation, despotism, and brutal inhumanity were visited upon the majority of humanity - the Europe of the World Wars, China for most of the century, and on and on - and how fortunate those spared such travails (and their descendents) are.Throughout, Pasternak's characters comment on the flow of events, the political struggles, the conduct of, first, the World War and later the Civil War, the states-of-play at various key junctures, the putative winners and losers, the impositions of what must seem arbitrary policy (and then policy reversals), all in the name of advancing to some formless Communist Utopia but, to the cynically incisive observations of Zhivago and other perceptive observers, simply a Soviet variation of high-stakes politics of power-seeking individuals. THIS is how depotism and deprivation of freedom looks, and it's an experience alien to most American readers and one worthy of serious contemplation. Zhivago is filled with long, philosophical digressions that in general weigh humanism and spirituality against ideological politics; many found these passages tedious and a drag on the narrative. Suffice to say, I did not. This was my second reading of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO. My first was about forty-three years ago, when I read it as part of a college course of Russian literature in translation (we also read Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, et al). About all I remembered from then was that the novel did not strike me as one of the greats of world literature, or even Russian literature. My overall response now is much the same, although I am glad I re-read it.Most everyone knows the basic story from having seen David Lean's magnificent film. But Lean's "Doctor Zhivago" is not Pasternak's. The film deviates too much from the novel for seeing the movie to be a substitute for reading the book. The biggest discrepancy is in the character of Zhivago, who in the book is less heroic and more feckless than he is in the movie. In turning such a sweeping novel as DOCTOR ZHIVAGO into a film, numerous cuts and simplifications are of course necessary. But, for me, the movie's omission of Zhivago's third wife Marina, the daughter of a house porter, is inexcusable. And hence, in the book, Zhivago abandons not only his "legal" wife Tonya and their children -- for Lara, the natural, irrational love of his life -- but he also abandons his third wife Marina and their children -- because family life becomes too much for him (in other words, he is too selfish).The centerpiece of the story, of course, tracks the tumultuous times in Russia of World War I, the Russian Revolution, and then the Russian Civil War. There is violence, rebellion, famine, and typhus. Families are splintered and lives are transformed . . . and many end prematurely.To me, the story sprawls too much. Worse, it relies too much on extraordinary, almost divine, coincidences. I marked seven such coincidences, and in doing so I did not count such things as the improbable multiple roles of Kamorovsky -- as the lawyer who drove the boy Yura Zhivago's father to suicide, who also was the lawyer for Lara's mother who then seduced Lara, and who in later years suddenly showed up to save Lara and her daughter. And then there is the feckless character of Zhivago.What redeems the novel, for me, is its exploration of "the accursed questions" ("prokliatye voprosy" in Dostoevsky's phrase), namely, the ultimate questions of human existence--the nature of man, the existence of God, the problems of evil, the looming omnipresence of death, and the meaning of life. Some of Pasternak's philosophizing seems fatuous to me, and some of it is inscrutable. But much of it is more or less on the mark, and at least he is writing in the grand tradition of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.Another notable aspect of the novel is its meditations on the Russian Revolution. Paternak was ambivalent about it, and sufficiently critical of it and the Communist state it brought about that the novel could not be published in the Soviet Union until thirty years after it first was published in 1957 (in an Italian translation). Moreover, he was not allowed to accept the Nobel Prize when it was awarded him in 1958. What, then, did Pasternak think of the Russian Revolution? In the words of one of his characters, "History will sort it all out."A few words about this edition, in which the translation is by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky: The prose is among the most "modern" that I have encountered in my ongoing traversal of Russian literature in translation (a reprise of sorts of that college course decades ago). As much as Pasternak reminds me, alternately, of Dostoevsky and then of Tolstoy, his prose, at least as rendered here, is more straightforward, more modern. Is that because of Pevear and Volokhonsky? Or is it Pasternak? This edition is footnoted, with twenty pages of endnotes collected at the back of the book. They are excellent, not only because they are informative but also because they are judicious, in that P&V do not go overboard annotating everything that might not be known to the average high school graduate. In addition, however, I for one would have appreciated a listing of the numerous characters (a who's who or dramatis personae), including all the variations of each character's Russian name.

I just finished Boris Pasternak’s novel, “Doctor Zhivago,” and I’m a bit wrecked. I had to lie down after finishing. This was a re-reading after too many years. It is one of my all-time favorites, so highest recommendation! I’d forgotten how excellent it is. I always enjoy a good nexus, and here the nexus is my love of history, especially the end of the Romanov Dynasty, Russian Revolution of 1917, and gorgeous writing. This translation is from 2014 and it is wonderful. Yes, the movie is sublime, but the book is even better. I want to run away to Siberia now. Forward my mail to Varykino.

The book that still has a spot on my keeper shelf in paperback form, was reduced to an at times boring, at best “I like it OK” reading experience. The part that focused on the house, the haunting and the murders was still interesting; but I think I outgrew the romance between Trevor and Zach. I think I outgrew them as well. I may have found their alienated, androgynous demeanors titillating and exciting 25 years ago, but today I just wanted to give them a sandwich and a cup of soup.The story starts in 1972 when “underground” cartoonist Bobby McGee rolls into Missing Mile, North Carolina with family in tow. To be fair, Bobby’s problems started well before he took up residence in the creepy old house on Violin Road. Bobby was already suffering from a serious case of “Drawers’ Block” and had not produced any new episodes of Birdland the “crazed, sick, beautiful" adult counterculture comic (think Fritz the Cat) that he had created in some time. Probably didn’t help that he developed a strong love of Bourbon that brought along some anger management issues.Who could really say what caused him to snap and go all Maxwell’s Silver Hammer on his wife and 3-year-old son. Or for that matter, what possessed him to leave his 5-year-old son drugged but alive while he nipped off to hang himself in the shower. 25-year-old Trevor McGee wants to know. On his own since the age of 14 due to his abusive parents; he’s eked out a comfortable existence for himself thanks to his ability to make money clicking a computer mouse. Sure, he has issues with intimacy, sleeps around like a dog in heat and seeks out only meaningless sexual encounters but….19. Life for Zach doesn’t seem too bad until one of his hacker buddies tips him off that the Feds are onto him and coming for him so then he hits the road under cover of darkness for a grand adventure – and runs smack dab into asexual, virginal (but not for long) Trevor McGee.Zach and Trevor have immediate chemistry and insta-love and Zach gets pulled into the goings on at the murder house since he shacks up with Trev. There’s a good bit of page time devoted to the romance and unfortunately PZB’s sex scenes and I don’t get on well. I tend to read them with my face screwed up and a perpetual “eeewwww” about to escape my lips. I can’t say exactly but it’s something to do with body fluids and sloppy groping that turns me off. Since I’m not interested in Trevor and Zach’s sexual exploration or the development of their relationship; that leaves the mystery of the house and the bizarre alternate dimension that exists somewhere between the house and the addled mind of Bobby McGee – that doesn’t get nearly enough attention.Review may be read to the tune of:Bang! For those who've read Ms.Brite's first novel LOST SOULS... her second novel DRAWING BLOOD is essential for tying together some psychological loose ends. While the former is filled with angst and uncertainty, the latter is collected, poignant and honest in a way that mid-90s fiction so needed to be. For anyone who connected with the disjointedness of LS's Nothing, they may find solace and realisation in DB's Trevor and Zach. DRAWING BLOOD is not just a haunted house story, set in the deep South; it's a chance to reconcile all those questions that people with less-than-mainstream ideals have about love and psychology. For you see, DRAWING BLOOD is in itself a tale woven with magical thread to help bind that love-spell that went so horribly wrong in the lives of so many of its readers. Fans of Grant Morrison and Kaitlin Kiernan will appreciate this well-woven tale of love and loss and reconciliation.

I've heard many good things about Brite's novels, but this one really didn't do it for me. The story sounded promising, but the pace of the story dragged, and it was an effort for me to continue reading. The characters, for the most part, were decently crafted, and Trevor was a sympathetic young man, but none of them really gripped me and made me want to be a part of their tale.Maybe another of Poppys's books would be better for me.

DRAWING BLOOD by Poppy Z. Brite has everything a great horror novel should have; likeable characters, excellent back story, a moody atmosphere, and a sense of reality, that of which is often missing in most books. The novel is shocking, exciting, erotic; it's so many things at once that it's hard to describe.The novel opens up with the McGees ready to move to a new town. Bobby McGee is convinced that he can take his family further than the small town of Missing Mile, but ultimately fails to do so when the old car breaks down. So, after moving into a small house, life seems to start out normal enough. Little Trevor has discovered his love of drawing, which he's inherited from his father, his little brother is content with being a toddler, and Bobby's drawing while his wife works small jobs in town.The day after Bobby tells Trevor he draws a mean junkie, the oldest child's world is torn apart. He wakes to find his mother and little brother dead, his father hanging by a rope in the bathroom.Fast forward twenty years and we're introduced to a few other characters. Eddwina, or Eddy, a woman who works as a stripper down at the Pink Diamond; Zach, a young computer hacker who makes his money through theft and fraud; Kinsey, who is still haunted by what happened to the McGees, though is now running a bar called The Secret Yew; and, of course, our own Trevor. It immediately becomes apparent that Trevor and Zack are our main characters. Trevor's going back to Missing Mile because he's finally ready to face his past; Zach's running from the law after a friend messages him on a hacker`s forum saying `They`re on to you.'Through an odd twist of fate, the two young men meet fall in love. Trevor learns of Zach's law troubles while Zach learns of Trevor's own, of the birdland that haunts the back of his lover's mind. And while Trevor is searching for the reason behind Bobby's murder-suicide mission, the pieces are slowly starting to piece together, especially when they're living in a house that's tasted blood.DRAWING BLOOD was my first taste of Poppy's fiction, and I've enjoyed it immensely. It's been a long time since a novel has taken hold of me and literally forced me to keep reading. I would read for hours at a time, delving into the dark world that Poppy created in Missing Mile, North Carolina. The dark atmosphere and moody, disturbing story is appealing to any horror fan.Those who are thinking of NOT reading this novel based on the gay element, you better change your mind. Yes, while there are gay men as the main characters, that doesn't distract from the story any. While some people may think that all gay men are the stereotypical flamboyant people that the media illustrates, Brite gives all of her characters personality, hopes, dreams, fears, and even dark nightmares.This novel is definitely a must-read for any horror fan. The atmosphere is perfect, the story is chilling, and the characters are interesting enough to make you worry about them in ways that you don't normally worry about fictional people. Poppy really does an amazing job drawing you into her world and gluing you to it.
