WHY THIS BOOK WILL NEVER BE OUT OF DATE OR OBSOLETE This book does not focus on regulations, legislation, or whether or not a final decision is rendered with or without a medical doctor or psychologist, because IT DOES NOT MATTER TO YOU, the disability claimant. These things may change, but one thing that does not change is the requirements for full and complete evidence. It is not necessary that YOU, the claimant, know the body systems or listings of impairments or any other number of extraneous and complicated bits of law and medicine. What you do want and need is a short, step-by-step set of instructions that you can actually check off. These are provided for you in a few easy to understand pages that will give you ALL you need TO DO and TO KNOW to have the best chance of receiving a favorable decision. These requirements for evidence, from your doctor and others that are clearly and concisely indicated, do not change. There will be no need to revise and issue subsequent editions as long as the SSI and Social Security Disab!ility programs continue. Your best chance of being allowed benefits is to follow the directions provided. Your time is best spent getting what the Disability Examiner and Medical Consultant are looking for when making a decision, not studying body systems, law, or medical terminology. The title says it all, this is a short HOW TO book from an author who has made thousands of disability decisions. Every effort has been made to resist the temptation to include material that is professionally interesting to those in the disability field, but is of little value to the disability applicant and ends up driving up the length and cost of the book, and confuses rather than clarifies. Regulations, practices, political influences and legislation change, but the basic requirements for evidence do not. IF WHAT YOU WANT IS SIMPLE, SHORT DIRECTIONS, THAT GIVE YOU THE INSIDE TRACK ON HOW TO HAVE THE BEST CHANCE OF GETTING DISABILITY THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.

I applied for SSI and SSA Disability in 2005 and won my case on the first time around. I used Mike Davis' book and did not find it out of date at all. In fact, Mr. Davis says he doesn't deal with all the legal issues that change because they're not what a case hinges on. What counts is the medical evidence and forms. I found that what was in his book was exactly what I needed. And in fact, he answered my emails within a couple days about my questions. His email address is in the back of the book.P.S. My uncle used the book this year too in New York and also won his case. We also liked Douglas Smith's book. It complimented Mr. Davis' perfectly. The book by Nolo appeared more suited to doctors and lawyers--technical.

First of all, looking through the reviews and comments, it is fairly apparent that the author monitors the reviews of this book and upvotes/downvotes legitimate reviews posted here in order to support sales of his book. I recommend reading through all the reviews here before making a purchase decision and take the "helpful" vote with a grain of salt on this title. This self-published "book" contains surprisingly little real content, for a book described as 148 pages. Chapter 1 begins on page 17 and the last chapter ends on page 93. Describing 76 actual pages as 148 is a real stretch. The 76 actual pages are printed in huge typeface that reminds me of a large print edition for the visually impaired. If this book were printed in a standard font, I suspect there would be no more than 50 pages of usable material. About 20 pages of the book are nothing more than the same form (of very dubious value) duplicated over and over again. Really? Was the goal of this book to reduce stress on the local copy machine? Like a college freshman writing his first research paper, the author has pulled all the stops to make this book appear far more substantial than it is. Those expecting a full length book for their money will be disappointed by these shenanigans. From a more practical standpoint, my experience in the industry convinces me that most people need professional representation when applying for Social Security disability, especially in cases that are denied at the initial level and later proceed to the hearing level. If you do decide to represent yourself, there are lots of websites dedicated to SSDI that cover this material in much greater detail with more current information, at no charge. Disability Secrets, published by NOLO, is one very useful website, though there are many others.

I knew absolutely nothing about how to apply for SSI for my disabled daughter. I had put off applying for several years as I was frightened I'd get it wrong and not have enough medical evidence of her disabilities. This book helped me understand the process and how much documentation would be required. We should have applied as soon as she turned 18, but as it was she was 22 by the time I got this book. She was approved within a month of our application because I knew how to fill out the many pages of forms and I had already got all the necessary medical and psychological testing reports copied first. The book was very helpful with explaining why the process can take a long time, how to check up on claim progress without annoying the case worker, what documentation to take to the SS office to avoid wasting everyone's time.I guess if you know someone who already knows how to claim SSI or SSDI then you don't need the book, but I didn't know anyone on any kind of disability benefits so I did find this book extremely helpful.

I bought this and two other books (the nolo book and Smith's workbook). I found it okay, but no different than what was available online for free. It was not helpful in the application process or with the questionnaires. I did use some very helpful books to help with the Adult Function Report Questionnaire, the Work History Questionnaire, and one to help my family member with the Third Party Function Report (it really is a lot to hand to someone and say just fill it out). The books I found most useful that really went step by step through the process with instruction that was easy to follow were Patricia Petow's "How to Get Social Security Disability SSI" and the Wilborn method workbooks: social security disability: a step by step guide to getting your benefits:initial application level which took me step by step through the questions and the Wilborn social security disability a guide for witnesses the function report adult third party form book. These 3 books helped me get through the required paperwork, which is what I needed help with. If you are about to apply, or in the process of applying and will have to complete these questionnaires, save yourself the time and money and get the Petow book and the Wilborn workbooks. All of the reading in those is directly related to application, from credible experienced sources.

Purchased for a relative who was at the beginning states of considering disability a couple of years early. This book gave an excellent step-by-step guide on what is a qualifier, how to file, then what steps to take if denied. It was an excellent resource for the whole family as they walked through the process.

This book is a MUST read for anyone trying to get SSDI and/or SSI. Very informative information. It takes you through the process chapter by chapter so you understand the process. I still think that it is very difficult to get SSDI and/or SSI on your own however this book helps you to understand what steps need to be taken and the process that the Social Security Administration puts everyone through. Good book none the less!

I purchased this book to assist me in studying for an exam. It was very easy to read and complimented my other study material. It even had information in it that my other material did not. I have kept this book as a main source of reference and highly recommend it.

Fair book.
