While the book itself is okay, it is written for people looking to use Linux as a desktop.I was looking for something more targeted at Admins forced into dealing with Linux servers for the first time. Scripting, Monitoring, Management, Security, etc.. This was what I was expecting, not a chapter on Gnome and second chapter on application of the desktop. It really should have been titled, "Learn the Linux Desktop in a Month of Lunches."

Gives a great intro to Linux and just enough command line to get you going. The In A Month of Lunches series of books never disappoints.

I would give this book a rating of four and a half stars, if I could. The book has filled a specific need for me and likely will fill a similar need for many others -- but it won't please everyone who uses a Linux-based operating system. There are several different "flavors" of Linux, and this book is oriented toward Ubuntu, while also giving some basic information about the others. In my case, when Microsoft decided to pressure its Windows users to move to Windows 10, three of the five computers in my business were too old to support the upgrade, yet they still worked fine and could do the jobs I needed them to do. So, impulsively, I moved all three over to Ubuntu, a Debian-based version of Linux. Older hardware generally runs well with Linux. Through a combination of books, websites and contacts with other Ubuntu users, I began learning how to do the general tasks I need to get jobs done. I can now work reasonably well at the command-line levels of Ubuntu and Windows, but often I have not had any real idea what many of the murky, unintuitive Linux commands actually mean or do. And there are many useful features and commands available in Ubuntu that I had not tried at all until I had this book in hand. I was stuck in a narrow comfort zone built from what I had learned haphazardly. The goal of this book is to make you proficient and productive with Linux but not an expert or a system administrator. (Those would take much longer than a "month of lunches.") Steven Ovadia generally does a good job of explaining and showing the basics of using a Linux-based computer, such as working with the file system, connecting to networks, installing and upgrading software, setting up and managing a desktop environment, using the home/office software suite, and playing music and videos. He has delivered a well-written how-to guidebook with many helpful illustrations . It has improved my capabilities, confidence and productivity when I sit down at the keyboard of a Linux-based system.A criticism: Many who use a combination of Windows and Linux computers have at least heard of Wine, a software tool that lets you run some (but definitely not all) Windows programs within Linux. Ovadia skips over the multi-step process required to actually install Wine and hurries to installing a Windows program. A clearer discussion of the steps would have been helpful. My thanks to Manning Books for providing an advance reading copy for review.

First things first, why did i take off one star? First of all, the book focuses primarily on Ubuntu and goes into great detail in Ubuntu specific tools and applications. As someone who primarily works on RHEL/Centos, I found myself skipping those sections all together. Also, sometimes author would describe something in greater detail than it should be, for example, you can close the window by clicking on the buttons on the left - I mean, come on, everyone with MacOS already does it and it is not that hard to figure out... I felt that without those two things book would be smaller and easier to consume since it would be to the point.Otherwise the book is awesome. it goes into history of Linux and provides some interesting trivia information, then it has very good step by step tutorial on more complex subject that I found it was very easily explained. The book provided the good flow building up on how to get linux installed, get some hands on with UI, then command prompt and then some internal stuff... which is great since i rather get some hands on stuff first before you try to explain to me different directory structure! So I would highly recommend this book for someone who is trying to get in the world of Linux and wants to run Ubuntu as their primary OS. Btw, the author even goes into dual boot OS for someone who is not quiet ready to make the jump!

Brilliant for any beginner. Well organized and so easy to follow.

Great book for a beginner.
