Awful! Nothing happened throughout 20 stories. Imagine listening to many distant aunts or a few effeminate uncles with deep grudges and endless "stream of consciousness" voices: shaggy dog stories with no purpose and too much info. This book has no sense of achievement, except the judges voted for another year of the women. A typical accomplishment in these stories is a female author describing how some guy talks compassionately with his son while his wife listens and *cleans!* One of the "stories" is really just an old lady describing details of three different houses she lived in. Of one she says, "I can't believe I lived there." Readers won't either. O. Henry told stories that were zippy and ironic, so it's sad when his award becomes a poetry prize for boring-character driven plots and social causes. One of the judges said, "In 12,000 words [the first chapter] manages to include all the large, small, secret, shameful, silly, gorgeous, and terrible parts of life." Is that what you want from a 40-page story? I prefer 10 pages with at least one memorable thing. This book helps you sympathize with those who want to clean the swamp and make things happen again. The 2010 edition I recently re-read was good. If I had time for literary experiences, I wouldn't want them in a short story anthology.

One of the finer collection of short stories I have read in some time. Recommended read. Interestingly sequenced. Exceptionally written.

This series is new to me, but I will buy each new volume. Great stories that capture the imagination.

A wonderful collection of stories. Some are slower than the rest but all of them engage the reader. It seems they’re all centered around humans and how messy our lives really are. Few clean breaks can be found and stories rarely end where you think they will.

These O. Henry Prize story collections are great for discovering new writers; I often pick up books by the writers whose stories I particularly liked. It's always a worthwhile read, though with each year, my enjoyment varies depending on how my taste lines up with the jurors'.The only way I know to review and rate these collections is by the number of stories that left a strong impression on me. The 2018 edition had five stories that wowed me -- about on par with other editions -- and nearly all the stories were worthwhile.Some high points for me: Jo Ann Beard's “The Tomb of Wrestling,” a favorite of two of the jurors, in which a home invasion sparks recollections from a woman's past; Michael Parker's “Stop ‘n’ Go,” a brief but bracing piece that follows the frank reminiscences of a World War II vet; Mark Jude Poirier's “How We Eat” (perhaps the most memorable story for me) -- two siblings help their mother scrounge for money for lunch while trying to avoid her anger; Michael Powers' “More or Less Like a Man,” in which a man, hoping to avoid a conversation with a stranger on an airplane, becomes drawn to her story; Jo Lloyd's “The Earth, Thy Great Exchequer, Ready Lies,” an evocative story of empire building that takes an unexpected turn.One caveat: Three stories, though well-written and engaging, were from the "Life is Miserable" school of fiction writing. As I get older, I appreciate these types of stories less and less.I liked that only two of the stories are from the New Yorker. Other collections of prize-winning stories have had as many as a quarter of the stories from the NYer, so if you are a subscriber, you've already read 1/4 of the book.

This collection is guaranteed to be good, and I was thrilled when I received a review copy, thanks to Net Galley and Doubleday. Those that enjoy strong fiction should buy it and read it, even if you have to pay full jacket price. This year’s edition holds 20 prize winning stories along with a bit of judging commentary at the end. This book is now for sale.The first story in any short story collection is bound to be good, and so I knew that Joanne Beard’s Tin House would be strong, and it is, in a dark, surreal way. I wouldn’t read it at bedtime lest it enter my dreams, but it’s memorable, original, and gritty. I also enjoy Brad Felver’s Queen Elizabeth, and Past Perfect Continuous, by Dounia Choukri. My favorite of all of them, the one that made me laugh out loud, is Why Were They Throwing Bricks, by Jenny Zhang, a story that features a cagey, manipulative Chinese grandmother and the grandchildren whose lives she enters, leaves and reenters. Zhang appears to have mostly published poetry up to this point, but I hope she writes more fiction, because I want to read it.The only aspect of any short story that I don’t enjoy is the open-ended sort that conclude with no real resolution. This screamingly frustrating inclination is minimal here, showing at the ends of a just a couple of the featured stories.Short stories are terrific to leave, once you’ve finished them, in your guest room, because people that stay with you briefly can read a story or more without the frustration of having to either leave an incomplete novel behind or beg to borrow it, not knowing when they can return it. If you need an excuse to get this excellent collection for yourself, there it is.Highly recommended.

When history is written, it is often from the perspectives of leaders and governments. History can't be told without discussing those, but too often the perspectives and motivations of everyday people are missing. Not here: Weavers of Revolution focuses on the experiences of textile workers in the first factory to be directly taken over by its workers during the Allende administration.What was happening in the ministries and the presidential palace is not left out, but rather deftly woven into the story of the textile workers, putting together a well written account of history from above and from below. Far from faceless masses, the textile workers are complicated human beings with varying motivations, who must overcome fear and memories of past repressions before they can band together to improve their lots.This book fully lives up to its reputation as a classic telling of Chile during the years of Popular Unity.

Slow at times, but very well researched. This is an important, yet little known, story about America and our Cold War foreign policy.

The guys/gals in this book have a rippling effect in the history of co's. It really goes to show that south America has been the testing ground of NeoLiberal politics for the last 50 years.

Readable, well-written, and highly informative. I couldn't imagine what it must have been like for the Old Timers who, having been exploited brutally for decades, now possessed the dignity and pride of being the cooperative owners and managers of their mill.

The seizure of Yarur factory on April 25, 1971 marked the beginning of a tumultuous struggle for socialism in Chile. Salvador Allende, of the popular unity party, ran on a platform that sought to unify the working population. Allende's vow to guide Chile down the democratic road to socialism is one of his greatest legacies. The democratic road to socialism was paved, at least symbolically, with the efforts of the working class. The failures and successes of Allende's travel through la "via Chilena" hinge on whether "the Chilean revolutionary process was of and by the workers or merely for the workers." Allende would die the death of a martyr: machine gun in hand in an enflamed national palace that had been besieged by a hostile coup. If Allende died the death of martyr, to whom was he a hero? Inconsistent with traditional revolutionary ideology Allende feared a rampant revolution. As a self-proclaimed Marxist his views irked both capitalists and the middle class. El presidente compañero, regardless, was a president for the people. His core constituency demanded a revolution from below and thus complicated the revolution from above that Allende attempted to impose. With these conflicts in mind Peter Winn analyzes the extent to which Allende (a socialist) both failed and succeeded as a revolutionary.

Winn is puzzlingly ignorant of the basic history of socialism, frequently making inaccurate claims about the novelty of worker actions or perspectives and failing to explain extremely straightforward applications of mainstream socialist thought. I cannot imagine that he has ever read Marx, which seems an odd blind spot for someone who publishes about socialist revolutionary process. His pro-capitalist perspective is further puzzling. Winn never misses an opportunity to explain that the workers never understood what they were doing, or to praise Yarur, even seeming amused that the factory owner kept a "harem" of female workers and assigned favorable work opportunities according to sexual favors. While the work on the Yarur factory is clearly exhaustively researched, the frequent errors in context and analysis substantially discount the scholarly value of the work. Aesthetically it is a good example of academic writing of its period: thus contemporary readers may find it insufferably florid.

Winn is currently a History Professor at Tufts University (added the link to his office below) but at the time he began the research for this book he was completing his doctorate at Cambridge University. It is an interesting read, mostly documented with interviews with workers at the mill themselves. Winn gives good insight into the history of the mill itself and in doing so carefully explains the Chilean political class structure and the generational differences between the less politicized older workers and the more vocal younger workers.His main thesis, is essentially that Allende was to cautious in believing that he could appease the Christian Democratic faction of the Popular Unity coalition and instead should have embraced the calls from his own Socialist Party faction to immediately turn over factories to workers. While one may disagree with his perspective, there is no doubt that this work should be read by people from all political stripes if they want a detailed work into the politics within the PU government and grassroots activism in Chile during the Allende years.[...]

I used this in a graduate fluid transport class at UM. Excellent textbook, but be forewarned that it contains a mathematically elegant (and also mathematically challenging) presentation of the subject. While good for some, less mathematically inclined students may wish to check out other texts.The book while mathematically involved also appears to be self-contained (in the sense if you know or once knew freshman calculus and perhaps some basic vector calculus as well) the appendices are sufficient to learn the vector and tensor notation used and required to understand the book.If you want a good advanced understanding of transport phenomena, look here after you've learned from an undergraduate textbook (such as Transport Phenomena by Bird, Stewart and Lightsfoot; Fundamentals of Heat and Mass by Incropera, or Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers by Wilkes).

This is easily the best book Ive ever had on transport and fluid mechanics. It smokes everything else. The scaling logic is top notch and so clear. Everything is methodically presented, which I enjoy.I'd say the weakest point is the finite Fourier transform method for solving linear PDEs, I couldn't pick up the method from the text and had to be taught it from another source. Separation of variables tricks work for most of the the problems in the text anyway. But afterwards it is a great reference for getting the proper basis functions for different situations.Great introductory stuff on regular and singular perturbation analysis/boundary layers. I was shocked to see it having an average of three stars, are you kidding me? I know it is in use by most professors at both UW Madison and UC Berkeley's transport classes, two of the top ranking research places for chemical engineering to my knowledge. I use it referring to fluid mechanics topics more often than any other book. Just fantastic.

This book is so hard to read ,no detailed information, really hard to learn.

Amazing book. I learned a lot, even having a masters in transport Phenomena already. It is the international version for southeast Asia, which is practically the same as the US version, except this one has one chapter less and some different problems.

it is the international version. there is a huge difference between this book and the US version. this version miss a lot of problems and describe.

The book came in New condition and is a good book. However, the international edition is not the actual 2nd edition of the book; it's the first edition for the full price book. If your classes assigns HW using this book it'll unfortunately be the wrong questions.

Great transport textbook I would highly recommend to Chemical Engineers (especially at the graduate level), or anyone else highly interested in transport and fluids. The language is concise, but the explanations are sufficient to get to complex topics with some heavy thinking on your own accord. Definitely a textbook I will keep in my library.

I like the way it keeps the book from any drop in qualities. I order paperback version and at the bottom left tip, it put a cover to protect the book cover

There is absolutely no formatting on all. Each page says "On War.txt" and is obviously just a printed text document in Courier New font. This is embarrassing. DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION.

Colonel J.J. Graham's translation of the original work is adequate. However, Graham's edition only contains the first four books of the work. If you are looking for the complete works I recommend Carl von Clausewitz, On War, eds. and trans. Michael Howard and Peter Paret (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1984), particularly if you are using this book for your scholarly or research work. This recommended edition will provide far more guidance than Graham did on the contents by the three translators, includes some of the updates, and its organization is better. I did not realize that I did not have the complete works until two classmates referenced chapters that I could not find in this edition. Further, research revealed this to be an incomplete work. The absence of a conclusion and the abrupt end was a little strange to me but now makes sense.

Book arrived today and is clearly just a computer text file printed and bound by a self-publishing house. The header is even printed as "On war.txt". No attempt has been made to do any formatting or copy editing. The book is printed in that ugly, difficult to read font which comes as a default on most basic text editors. Needless to say the page formatting and spacing is atrocious. Actually, I can't think of a way this sorry excuse for a "publication" was not made as cheaply and carelessly as possible. Amazon should be ashamed to have produced this and can expect a complaint. This is product is a shameful ripoff and I want my money back.

The book I got only has Book I-IV. It's supposed to be through to Book VIII, where is the second half?? Also the table of contents shows Book IV ending on page 308...however this entire book only has 161 pages. So something is off here. The table of contents does not match the rest of the book and it seems I was shorted half of the book.

Warfare is a complex matter, going from the daily routine of the soldier up to the highest reaches of government. Its influence permeates entire societies and has always been a factor shaping the destiny of nations. Not being a military man, I nonetheless found it fascinating and enlightening how Clausewitz tried to cut through the complexity and penetrate to the heart of the matter.His central point is that war is an instrument of policy. As a result, there is no purely military problem. The commander needs to understand the political goals and act accordingly. When the process fails it's because the policy itself was bad, not because of politicians interfering in "purely military matters".It can get a bit humorous when Clausewitz talks about armchair generals. He dismisses them as useless pedants, deriding them for coming up with an excess of useless rules and concocting impractical schemes. Clausewitz points out that there is a lot of "friction" in war, when issuing orders and moving men around, that non-soldiers seldom appreciate. More to the point, he emphasizes the role of the commander's judgment in dealing with the specifics of a situation.I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in military matters. With that said, don't dive into it blindly. Clausewitz draws heavily on examples from the campaigns of Frederick the Great and Napoleon. Familiarize yourself with the Seven Years' War and the Napoleonic Wars before picking this up. A brief overview of the wars between the Grand Alliance and Louis XIV wouldn't hurt either.

This is a total rip off. It's essentially a printed Windows text file with a cheap book cover. I should have looked at the reviews before buying but for $5 I was pretty indiscriminate. I'll be a lot more cautious in the future for sure. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Please avoid this edition of On War.I thought it was a little strange when I opened it and found it was printed in that same small-print Courier font as say a text file prints in.Then I looked at the top, and each page had a heading of "On War.txt"This edition of this book is literally a text file of On War dumped to a cheap printer, with no formatting, no editing, and it being painfully obvious that they didn't review it at all before hitting print.I'm now looking for a better edition to replace this one.

Emilio D'Alessandro was effectively Kubrick's personal assistant for thirty years. An Italian ex-racing driver (!), he freely admits he knows nothing about film, and, indeed, had never viewed even a single Kubrick film from beginning to end until after having worked with the man on a daily basis for decades. (Also, one very tiny quibble: the photos in the book are mostly small and rather fuzzily reproduced.)What this is, really, is a joint biography of two families, the D'Alessandros and the Kubricks. Sensitively written (with the participation of Filippo Ulivieri) the book transports you into Kubrick's working household, and a portrait of the great director built up through a thousand details of daily life and casual interactions between the director and others. There are no boardroom power meetings here, and no premiers, There is just the man. Workaholic, driven, and hugely intelligent, yes. A mass of contradictions and, at times, jaw-dropping eccentricity, Kubrick comes to life as never before in this intimate account by Emelio D'allesandro, his trusted personal assistant and friend for 30 years. And though at times I wondered how Emelio could have dealt with all that was asked and expected of him by Kubrick without having a nervous breakdown or physical collapse (something which ultimately does nearly happen), I also found myself surprisingly moved to tears by the affection and respect these two men held for each other as so beautifully expressed in this one-of-a-kind, minutely observed book. So many books serve to perpetuate the myth behind the man; a brooding, reclusive, obsessive-compulsive control freak. And though in many ways this book reinforces those notions, what makes this book so special is that it gives us context through real life, behind-the-scenes and private moment anecdotes which end up softening the myths. Emilio was an essential cog to the Kubrick machine. A trustworthy friend and ally who Kubrick relied on for his ingenuity, strong work ethic, and frankness. Their bond was so unique and special and this book articulates that bond so well.This book is beautiful and indispensable. There is no dirt, no juicy gossip. Just a 30 year journey between two friends. I couldn't put it down.

My headline isn't referring to Kubrick, it refers instead to Emilio D'Alessandro, the guy who was the only assistant Kubrick completely trusted for the last 20 years or so of his life. Kubrick couldn't handle the unpredictability and messiness of the world outside his door, so D'Alessandro took care of that and a whole lot more for the legendary director. The author is careful to keep certain things about Kubrick confidential - and yet, you probably will learn more about the reclusive filmmaker here than anywhere else. Ultimately, a kind of love story that's absorbing, informative and very touching towards the end.

An unexpected gem. Not a "film book" for those seeking to understand Kubrick's films better, but a highly personal and often very emotional memoir by the man who worked closely with Kubrick on the daily business of running a big life and bigger productions longer than anyone else. From "A Clockwork Orange" in 1971 through "Eyes Wide Shut" to Kubrick's final days, Mr. D'Alessandro was at or near Kubrick's side, and it is clear that his friend's passing in 1999 left him bereft. Kubrick was, of course, an endlessly complex man, and this book, more than any other I've read, offers a clear-eyed look at the day-to-day form taken by that complexity. If you love Kubrick's films, you owe Mr. D'Alessandro a debt, as his quiet facilitation of Kubrick's life, his home, and his production methods made the films possible.

Honestly, there are so many As Seen On TV products that really have not worked for the better for the dollar. In the case with the ones for cooking, they have worked nicely. The Power Pressure Cooker XL has been one of the most innovative devices that I have seen made with simplicity & convenience. Especially when most people haven't used regular pressure cookers for the stovetop. But trying to see that there can be a good cookbook for pressure cookers, is a much harder task. The Complete Power Pressure Cooker XL Cookbook is actually alright & has a lot of great recipes that do work for time, convenience & durability. However, there is one major disadvantage to the cookbook that doesn't make it strong enough compared to other cookbooks on the market. You do not have any picture of the dishes that you are trying to prepare from the cookbook in there. So you do not know how the food will come out after it is prepared. While it does give good recipes for pasta dishes, rice dishes & meat dishes, it could've gone in a bit more with making seafood & deserts that also can be made in the cooker. But considering that there are so few cookbooks for the As Seen On TV items, or for electric pressure cookers overall, this is a fair start for anyone that has bought a electric pressure cooker.Price: C+Displays & Content: B-Overall: C+

I've tried 3 recipes from this book. All 3 recipes were wrong, they ALL turned out incorrectly. I followed the recipes exactly. 2 were overdone, one to the point of being burned onto my cooker and inedible, the other salvaged with some extra liquid after the fact (so I basically had to cook it twice). The other was so underdone it took me over an hour of re-cooking it to get it right. The settings and timings are incorrect in the recipes. Example, one recipe told me to use the Soup/Stew setting for 8 minutes. The least amount of time available on this setting is 10 minutes. Another recipe told me to slow release the pressure in one sentence and the next sentence was to quick release the pressure. Yet another told me to use a setting that's not even on the device. Did anyone edit this book? Did anyone actually try the recipes before they printed this book? Is this book even for the Power Pressure Cooker XL or did they just slap that name on it? It was only $1, but I still want my money back! I certainly won't be using this book.

This cookbook had a lot of good and useful recipes to be made in the Power Pressure Cooker XL. It's hard to find any cookbooks that are specific to this pressure cooker (most are for the Instant Pot brand) and this is the best I've found so far. I would recommend.

So many recipes! Where to start. This is an excellent. Lol for beginners. I never knew all the things you could use this tool to do.

good learning tool

We got the cooker and cookbook to make meals in 15 minutes or less. There are virtually no meals you can make in less than 30-45 minutes. Meats needed to be seared in a pan or cooker prior to applying pressure. Very misleading . We returned both the book and the cooker.

Poorly organized. There is no index for finding recipes. The recipes don't sound very appealing to me and I was very disappointed with this purchase. I will probably never use this cookbook.
