The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives

Review

“Instead of trusting kids with choices. . . many parents insist on micromanaging everything from homework to friendships. For these parents, Stixrud and Johnson have a simple message: Stop. Instead of thinking of yourself as your child's boss or manager, try consultant.” —NPR“William Stixrud and Ned Johnson focus on the ways that children today are being denied a sense of controlling their own lives—doing what they find meaningful, and succeeding, or failing, on their own. Screen time, the authors say, is part of the problem, but so are well-meaning parents and schools, who are unwittingly taking from children the opportunities they need to grow stronger, more confident, and more themselves.” – Scientific American “If there’s one book I’d recommend to parents who are raising children of all ages—I’m talking preschool to 12th grade—this is the book.” –Atomic Moms"In trying too hard to control their children, too often parents have unwittingly become part of the problem they're trying to solve. Combining deep insights from clinical practice and educational coaching, Stixrud and Johnson have written a penetrating account of the chronic problems that many families now face and an incisive, practical guide to what parents can do to relieve them. . . An essential book for parents and educators everywhere." —Sir Ken Robinson PhD, Educator and New York Times Best Selling Author, Creative Schools"If you still have questions about whether or not excessive pressure and a narrow version of success are truly harming our children, The Self-Driven Child is an absolute must-read. While most books on the impact of stress on child development offer anecdotes and clinical examples, Stixrud and Johnson make it clear that it is now research that explains why kids don’t thrive under our current priorities. A healthy child needs a healthy brain.  Not only do they produce the evidence that shows why unremitting achievement pressure is toxic to our children, they also show us what the alternative would look like.  It is not an overstatement to say that this is one of the most radical and important books on raising healthy, resilient, purpose-driven kids." —Madeline Levine, PhD., author of The Price of Privilege and Teach Your Children Well   "Compelling, revolutionary, and wise, The Self-Driven Child empowers parents with the courage, the tools, and the mindset to reduce toxic stress, and to foster our child’s capacity for resilience, success, and optimal development. Its message—that we should trust kids to have more control over their own lives—is one every parent needs to hear." —Tina Payne Bryson, PhD, co-author of The Whole Brain Child and The Yes Brain  “Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do as parents is to parent our children a little less. This humane, thoughtful book turns the latest brain science into valuable practical advice for parents on how to pull back, when to engage and when to let go. Read it. Your children will thank you.” —Paul Tough, New York Times bestselling author of How Children Succeed “This serious and probing look at how to give our children the right kinds of independence shows us how much power we have to ensure they can function optimally.  It is a book about how to make our children more meaningfully independent, and to set ourselves free in the process.” —Andrew Solomon, author of Far from the Tree   "The Self-Driven Child will guide parents to the sweet spot between helicopter and hands-off parenting. Stixrud and Johnson ground their clear and practical advice in cutting-edge research and years of experience working with young kids and teens. An invaluable resource for the thinking parent." —Lisa Damour, PhD,  author of Untangled"A battleplan to attack the anxiety that's devouring kids and decimating their native potential, this extraordinary book shines a light into the darkness of test dread, chronic sleeplessness, 24/7 social-media 'beauty pageants' and the full array of stress-induced forces that undermine children. But Stixrud and Johnson do more than identify the demons -- they slay them. Read this incisive, witty, deeply-researched book and help your child bend toward the sunlight of learning and self-directed joy. A must read." —Ron Suskind, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of Life, Animated “Stixrud and Johnson combine science and compassion to make the case that parental over-control is eroding our kids’ confidence, competence and mental health. Accessible, compelling and richly researched, The Self Driven Child reveals the clear links between the stresses of competitive schooling and the anxiety and depression that are so widespread in kids today. This urgently-needed book has the potential to revolutionize the way we parent.” —Judith Warner, author of A Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety “Remember all the time you spent doing something just for fun and it wasn't a class or an organized sport? No grades? No trophies? That turns out to be what kids need to succeed. 'Self-driven' time.” – Lenore Skenazy, author of Free Range Kids“As parents we wonder, 'How can I help my kids learn to make good decisions?'  This lucidly written, deeply insightful, and highly engaging book—the best parenting book I’ve read in a long time—takes the mystery out of that process.  All the chapters—on why a sense of control is so important for kids, how to help kids develop their inner drive, the need to tame technology, and how you can teach even young children to understand and influence the working of their brain—give you the science behind the authors’ recommendations and action steps you can immediately take in your family.  We learn what good guidance looks like: how to help kids make thoughtful choices, handle stress, and grow in confidence that they can positively affect the course of their lives.  As Stixrud and Johnson make crystal clear, raising a 'self-driven' child doesn’t mean doing less as a parent; it actually means doing more—but in a collaborative, mutually respectful relationship that’s more rewarding for both parent and child.  You’ll still be a critically important authority figure, but also a consultant who asks questions like 'What’s your Plan B if Plan A doesn’t work out?'  You’ll be a parent who helps your child develop what the Greeks considered the master virtue: good judgment. That’s a gift that will last a lifetime. “ —Thomas Lickona, Ph.D., author of Character Matters and How to Raise Kind Kids   “This is the book we’ve all been waiting for. As a psychologist specializing in anxiety and stress in children, I have witnessed first-hand the fundamental change that children experience once they learn to face their fears and find the inner drive to take charge of their lives. The resulting sense of agency is transformative, and stays with them. This book offers solid and clear advice on how to create opportunities for our children to discover their own drive and develop that internal locus of control that is necessary to thrive in adulthood. More than ever, parents need the clarity and guidance so effectively expressed in The Self-Driven Child. Each chapter ends with a summary called 'What To Do Tonight,’ which explains how to apply the information in a practical and relatable way. This book will give parents much-needed insights into the child’s experience and how to facilitate the very best conditions to set them up for a rewarding and successful future." --Bonnie Zucker, Psy.D., Author of Anxiety-Free Kids and Take Control of OCD“A nuanced and enormously insightful look into the struggles facing so many children and teens… A wonderful resource for contemporary parenting, this title should knock less relevant child-raising guides right off the shelf.” —Booklist   "Stixrud and Johnson provide compassionate, well-supported suggestions and strategies for parents to help their kids deal with ever-more-competitive academics and extracurriculars. The authors make a highly persuasive case for how parents can help their children segue from feeling stressed and powerless to feeling loved, trusted, and supported." —Publishers Weekly

I am a teacher and administrator with more than thirty years working in independent schools, as well as a parent of an 18 year old son. I often read books like this one, but I rarely find any that are truly helpful. This book is the exception. The authors have very different perspectives, but they align beautifully on truths that I think are essential for parents. To name the most important controlling idea in the book: no parent can force a child to assume positive agency over his or her life. A great deal flows from that basic premise; this book will help parents move from being their child's manager to being their consultant. The authors also address many of the most important practical areas parents crave advice on, including technology use, sleep, learning disabilities, and standardized tests. The foundation for their advice is a clear understanding of the brain, which grounds their philosophy and suggestions in clear scientific understandings. As an added benefit, the writing style is clear, unpretentious, and often very humorous. I recommend this book strongly to parents, teachers, school administrators, and anyone else interested in providing today's children with the conditions that will encourage healthy child development and growth.

This is the book we’ve all been waiting for. More than ever, parents need the clarity and guidance so effectively expressed in The Self-Driven Child. As a psychologist specializing in anxiety and stress in children,I have witnessed first-hand the fundamental change that children experience once they learn to face their fears and find the internal drive to change their outcomes. The resulting sense of agency is transformative, and stays with them over time. This book is the underpinning of that work, offering solid and clear advice on how to create the opportunities for our children to discover their own drive and develop that internal locus of control that is necessary to thrive in adulthood. Each chapter ends with a summary called 'What To Do Tonight’ about how to apply the information in a practical and relatable way. This book will give parents much-needed insights into the child’s experience and how to facilitate the very best conditions to set them up for a rewarding and successful future. Parents will positively rethink the role they have in creating health and balance in their child’s lives, and in their own. The result will be that parents will have their own sense of agency when it comes to the often-complex and enormously influential role of parent.

Bill Stixrud and Ned Johnson picked the perfect subtitle for The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives. The book presents data and theory from fields such as neuroscience and psychology in support of the proposition that “you should think of yourself as a consultant to your kids rather than their boss or manager,” and then follows through with loads of practical advice on what, exactly, a more hands-off approach looks like.As a clinical neuropsychologist and a tutoring company founder, respectively, the authors work with both perfectionists and kids who “don’t seem to care about anything.” They’ve found that those at both ends of the motivation spectrum “suffer from a low sense of control” which is “enormously stressful.” The antidote? Giving your young child space to “practice managing and taking nonlethal risks.” Only by experiencing “the natural consequences of their choices, ranging from being uncomfortably cold when they decided not to wear a coat, to getting a bad grade on a test because they decided not to study,” will “her brain build the circuits that are necessary for resilience in the face of stress.” Going the other way, with sticker charts “and other forms of parental monitoring,” the authors say, creates “kids who must then constantly be pushed because their own internal motivation has either not developed or has been eroded by external pressure.”Let kids be bored. “Ask your child if there are things he feels he’d like to be in charge of that he currently isn’t.” Explain the reasons behind a request “and then allow[] as much personal freedom as possible in carrying out the task.” Make sure your child knows “that he is responsible for his own education.” Try to say—and say and say and say—“It’s your call.” But don’t “let go of all restrictions and rules.” Join with your kids in setting parameters “and let them work within them,” knowing that you’re there to offer counsel. It’s good stuff, the writing is tight enough, and the authors offer up a few stellar explanations (e.g., “Today, we think about the long-term consequences of concussions: ‘Yeah, he looks okay now, but too many more of those and he’s not going to remember his kids’ names.’ We think stress should be talked about in this way, too.”), but the text lacks the artistry or narrative element needed to shake that eating-of-the-vegetables vibe. A second flaw lies in statements such as “Girls are generally more interested by—and more consistently motivated to achieve in—school” and “Girls generally have more empathy.” Drawing distinctions without citing solid empirical evidence of their existence, analyzing just how significant any differences are, and nodding to socialization as a possible sole cause simply is not acceptable in light of modern neuroscience and social science research on pre-pubertal gender differences, and the inclusion of these statements makes me doubt the authors’ other assertions.Putting those concerns to the side, Stixrud and Johnson truly offer a wealth of information, albeit with the specifics mostly angled toward older children. The key ingredients for motivation, they say, are (1) the right mindset; (2) a feeling of autonomy, competence, and relatedness; (3) the optimal level of dopamine; and (4) flow. Then they offer “empowering mental strategies” for getting the recipe right, “like planning ahead and visualizing goals … or thinking of what you will do if what you want doesn’t come through.” They suggest teaching kids that replacing “I have to” with “I want to” or “I’m choosing to” increases their odds of success. It also helps to “avoid catastrophizing” by thinking, “This is annoying but it’s not awful,” or “This is a setback but it’s not a disaster.” Tests too are about mindset: “Look to conquer, rather than survive,” they counsel. Focus on strengths.Increasing downtime, meditation, sleep, and movement are all more standard suggestions than my favorite piece of advice, one I’ve already used with my nine-year-old who tends to engage in “negative self-talk.” When she called herself “stupid, stupid, stupid” for misplacing a folder, I used the authors’ words: “Imagine if we were on a softball team together. A routine ground ball is hit right at me, but goes between my legs. What would you say? Probably something like, ‘It’s all right. You’ll get the next one.’” Offer yourself the understanding you'd give your best friend, I told her, getting my money and time’s worth from The Self-Driven Child in that little gem alone.

As an educator, I find this book extremely valuable for parenting. The book is organized, engaging, and easy to read. It’s also a plus with recommendations at the end of each chapter, personal stories, and FAQs answered in many chapters. Excellent for administrators and guidance counselors to read too. It covers children of elementary and high school.

Great book. Clear and compelling rationale for respecting children’s independence by supporting them to develop the tools they need to make the decisions that are right for them and learn the way they need to learn...irrespective of whether or not it pushes our buttons. In the advertising business, we always say “You are not your customer” when judging the relevance of an ad. Similarly, parents need to understand “You are not your child.” Hard lesson but a good one.

This book is so practical while being based on science and years of experience. Our society needs to take a step back and rethink our expectations for children (and adults) because despite good intentions, we are increasingly adding more pressure to succeed without seeing results and often at the cost of well-being. This book is an eye-opener and highly recommended for every parent and educator.

I’ve read Kellerman’s books for decades. I still remember the first one, aware even then, that his work was different. He’s a uniquely-talented writer, easily able to enthrall a reader with a glimpse of dark and twisty California crimes. Kellerman’s books work because they are consistently good. Intelligent, fast-paced, smooth, confident writing. Believable dialogue that is realistic and often humorous. What always surprises me most, is that Kellerman can take a basic murder/mystery story, and spin it into an intricate and complicated tale that has steady momentum and near-constant movement. Never dull or plodding. Nothing tedious or inconsequential. Perhaps the true success of the books can be attributed to the genuine likability of main characters, Alex, Milo and Robin. These are characters that have literally stood the test of time. Familiar, comfortable and welcome, but always evolving too. I know of very few writers whose can successfully sustain some of the same characters for the span of actual years. Kellerman does it seamlessly, and the reader is happy to pick up the thread with these three people again. With books in the Alex Delaware series, the reader gets an inside look at police procedures, psychological insights and enduring friendships/relationships. Kellerman is one of the few authors whose books I await and often pre-order. Each book provides reliable entertainment, as does this latest offering. If you are new to Kellerman’s books, congratulations. If you are a long-time fan like me, this latest book will provide you with the elavated psychological drama that you have come to expect. Curl up and enjoy. Well worth the time and money spent.

I've read all of the Alex Delaware novels over the span of years; wait impatiently for the next one: read and re-read them over and over. I suggest you start from the beginning so you won't get tripped up by past references, however, Jonathan does a great job of backing a one time or new reader into the picture so you don't feel lost. His characters, Alex, Milo, Robin, Reed, Binchy, Petra, even Blanche the Frenchie, and her predecessor Spike; you can't help but look upon them as old friends. NIGHT MOVES is everything I hoped it would be. Murder mystery wrapped in a blanket of futility, guess work, false starts, lots of digging, all the while enjoying the intrigue but also the closeness of these two best friends (Alex & Milo) who play nicely off each other's strengths and weaknesses. The cynic and the optimist, two brilliant minds working I'm their own OCD methodical way to get to the bottom of a good old fashioned whodunnit. Jonathan Kellerman is my all time favorite author for a reason. And I love books with continuity, and old friends who never let you down. If you love a great read, again, start at the beginning of the Delaware series, you'll be in reading heaven for a long time, as soon as one is finished, frantically searching for the next book anywhere you can find it!

I've read everyone of JK's books over the years. It's as if something's happened since he wrote The Murder's Daughter, a fantastic stand alone the was torn to shreds by reviewers. Since then the Delaware books are formulaic with no inight to Alex or Milo as people. This one is downright convoluted with a red herring suspect that was persued just because the was odd. That drove half the book., When the fellow was cleared it was like, heck I just wanted my time reading this.Almost everyone of the characters are seen in this book From Peter to Moses. Flat and there only to please fans that like them.I gave it three stars because it's a decent book average for JK excellent for a lesser writer.I wish he'd go back and get out of the rut even revisit Butchers Theater or Murder's Daughter or something totally new because Kellerman is talented imaginative and wonderful. He can write truly amazing books. This isn't one of them.

Too many twists and turns, too many characters so we forget who some of them are. It was very difficult to keep up with the story line with new people and situations introduced constantly so you can never guess the outcome. I would not call these introductions "red herrings" as they were not that good. The last two or three chapters consisted of the author, through Dr. Delaware and others, explaining all of the previous events in the book. A good author (and generally Kellerman is good) will work out the ending in the story line, not to have it discussed after the book is essentially finished (without the explanation). I think this is his worst book. Not terrible (I was able to finish it) but in retrospect, I would not have wasted my time reading it.

I have read all of Mr. Kellerman's books, but in recent years I have vowed I would never buy another one of his. Unfortunately, I always give in to temptation, hoping that he has improved his novels. Over the past few years, his books have read like Google Maps, describing his characters driving over streets and avenues that most of his readers have never known and probably never will. He has also been tempted into detailing surrounding botany. Is it possible that his editors demand a certain number of words and/or pages and he has no other resource but to fulfill these demands with unintresting and boring details?

Love it!

A Great first book.

Minnesota has an immense variety of places to hike. It's the size of the British Isles. And it has a more complicated river drainage system than any other state -- rivers to the Gulf of Mexico, to the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. It has far more lakes than any other state, too. Plus it has more different kinds of habitat than any other state -- hardwood forest, northern evergreen forest, tall grass prairie, savannah and bog.The 87 Minnesota hikes described here will introduce you to the best of this, if you're just passing through there, or keep you busy for years if you live there.

This is a great resource for hiking. It has short day hikes as well as multi-day hikes. Keep in mind that the book, especially in state parks, seems to highlight one good trail in the park while the entire trail system can be much longer. Check with the parks to get a full idea of the full system. Gives a great condensed look at the hike for quick reference with GPS coordinates, difficulty, elevation, maps to use etc then gives an in depth look at the trail. I am a beginning hiker and have already found this book to be quite valuable. I use it with The Best in Tent Camping: Minnesota book for more info on the state parks. Minnesota also has a hiking club, check in at the visitor center at any state park for info or check out the DNR site.

I really enjoy this book. The entire state is covered from the north to the south. A brief description of each hike is included along with the general location and GPS coordinates. The maps outline the entire hike and even denote campgrounds and picnic areas. This book is a complete guide and wil supply years of hiking information

I am an adult picking up the violin again after playing briefly in school over twenty years ago. I play many (many) instruments so I have a familiarity with music in general. Of all the books of music I own, this one is the most fun to play.Overall, the product is a great value. The sheet music has violin and piano parts; however, another book bound inside of this book contains just the violin parts so you don't have to squint at the smaller staff and don't have to turn pages as often. The CD is excellent. Track 1 is simply a bowed A String so you can make sure you're in tune with the CD (which was already correct according to my tuner). The even-numbered tracks contain the orchestrated song WITH the violin part you have the music for so you can listen to the complete parts. The odd-numbered tracks contain the same song but with the violin part taken out so you can play along with your very own full orchestra. I found the printed music to be absolutely accurate with the recordings.I found this book to be good even for a beginner. The keys that these songs are in are not very difficult (C, D, G) with a few exceptions and perhaps some tricky accidentals. Some of the measure counting for some (rare) long rests and changes in time signature would be difficult to comprehend for an absolute beginner of any instrument, but if you even comprehend what I'm saying then it shouldn't be an issue at all.One minor complaint is that after copying these tracks to my mp3 player, I had to manually enter the song names as this album was not found for data being the very niche product that it is.Playing with accompaniment is fantastic practice. There is no stopping to get things right, you just have to go with it; just like you would in a live performance.I would LOVE to own more of these types of books. It's a great value for what you get and I only wish I had more songs to play along with. Highly recommended.

Very pretty to listen to, but as another reviewer said, the CD doesn't match the music in the book- not even remotely. It's impossible to use the CD to assist with learning the printed music, because of this- at least in the edition that I received, which is marked as the "Australian Edition."Why they would be sending the Australian edition to North America is beyond me, but I wouldn't have cared if it was usable.Perhaps there was a mix-up in the factory, and the wrong CD was placed in the book.

This is fantastic. Challenging, but attainable. There is sheet music for the violin with the piano part side by side (which is also helpful for following along during the rests) and also a section with just the violin. The parts that are just violin fit in 1-2 pages so you don't have to page turn in the middle of a song. Super handy. The recordings are great and really fun to play along with. This and the star wars one are the most fun things I've ever gotten for violin!

The LOTR soundtrack is my favorite soundtrack of all time. I was thrilled to find this book when I recently started playing the violin again. I played for some years as a child, but then took a very long break until earlier this year. Some of these pieces are easier than others. They might be a bit too difficult for a true beginner, but I think players of different levels could find enjoyment in these. The book contains a violin + piano part, and a removable section with just the violin part. There is also a CD that contains two versions of each track: one with a violin playing the violin part and one with just the accompaniment for you to play along. The CD might not play on all players. Also, my Windows Media Player automatically retrieved the track listings when I put the CD in my computer, but these aren't remotely accurate. They are all LOTR track names but they don't match up right, and some of them are in French.

I bought this for my wife, who plays violin. We all love Howard Shore's music for LotR.The package is put together very nicely. The book goes completely through, from table of contents through every song, with the piano score and the violin part above it. Then it starts over; almost like two separate books, with just the violin score. The CD is set up pretty much the same way. For every song in the book there is a track with the violin on there so you can hear how it sounds, and then a second track without the violin so you can do violin-karaoke!As far is how it is, my wife opened it up and played straight through it, song after song, on her violin on her first look, without hearing the CD at all, and it sounded just like it. (I didn't know she could read that well.)And for $15!? Heck, you'd pay 11-12 for any one of the soundtrack CDs alone.

I love this book. I was disappointed that it doesn't have the part of Ronan that every violinist dreams of playing though. The CD is fun to play with it has both the tune with the background and just background so you vanlay the tune. Very much satisfies the nerd in me!

So this is the LOTR Music, great music, great book. Everything you need to know. Are you thinking about playing LOTR music for piano or Violin? Yes? Then buy this book. The one thing, and this is probably just my computer, the soundtrack album data didn't upload with the rest of the songs to my music library. Some of them did, but not all of them. I just manually typed them in and problem solved. Also, if you love this I'd recommend the STAR WARS instrumental solos by the same publisher. Also a great book. That CDs info *did* upload, so I'm not sure what was wrong with this CD or me or my computer. Anyways, enjoy.

I'm a beginner and these are very hard for me. However, it's something to strive towards and I can work through a little of my favorite songs as I learn the basics from a beginner's book.

We love, love, love this book! My son took it twice from the library and I decided to buy it for him. He was very excited to have his own color monster book. Like a parent I like this book very much. Story and ilustrations are amazing. It's a good way for kids to learn about emotions.

I like everything about this book. I am planning on buying 5 favorite books as a gift to a child. This book gently shows a child, we do have emotions. But the story also gives answers to those emotions , when they happen. The ending is so sweet.

Cutest book! My son fell in love with this book. My husband thinks it is cute for teaching emotions. My 2yo still doesn’t really associate it with the colors, but he likes the story and pictures anyway.

Such a great book on emotions. It's not only a cute story identifying a spectrum of emotions, I love that there's examples of different ways we might experience them so it's more relatable. We read this one regularly!

My son and daughter both love this book.

This is a beautiful book about recognizing and sorting out emotions. I am a psychiatric nurse and bought this for my kids (aged 2 and 4). I highly recommend this book for young kids.

My daughter has problems regulating her emotions and I think this book has been helpful for her. Also, she loves the book so that is a plus! Very happy with my purchase.

This book is wonderful. It gives kids a reference for their feelings. Every single one of my students adores this book.

I'm not a gardener, so I need all the help I can get. This book is a great help for the non-green thumpers.

This is now my go-to book for gardening here in the Pacific Northwest. It's well laid-out and easy to find information on everything you would expect, from annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. I do with it included information on pest control and diagnosing problems on plants in our area.

Beautifully crafted book that every Northwest gardener should have on his or her shelf! The photography illustrating shrubs, plants, and flowers is excellent, and the writing is clear, easy to read and understand, and it's also friendly and warm - as if you and a friend are walking through the garden and you're getting the best possible advice on what, how, and when to plant. Author Pat Munts is a well-known garden and plant expert with decades of experience in the Pacific Northwest and a trusted resource when it comes to this topic. And if you don't personally need this book (and you do need this book if you have any type of yard!), it's perfect as a gift for someone who does.

Nice looking book..nice size. Actually is a gift but looks great. Great photos. good value

I bought this because Ciscoe Morris has recommended it. It is a GREAT resource for PNW gardeners. If you’re from the area and only want a couple gardening books, between this and the Sunset gardening book you would be set.

Good information but I feel some details were too brief in order to manage the size of the book. The derails are accurate and we'll written. Good illustrations and I feel this is a good reference for any gardener.

Very informative handbook of Northwest plants and bushes.

Beautiful book designed for PNW gardeners.

This review has two parts: comments on the story told by the book, and then comments about the book itself.First, the story. This is Colonel Hoare's personal account of his service in the Congo as a mercenary, helping the Congolese government put down a communist-backed revolt. Colonel Hoare is a good author, and his retelling of the events makes for a very fascinating read. This book may challenge any preconceptions you have about mercenaries and their use, and give you some insights into the mind of a mercenary commander. It documents the struggles he had getting his mercenary group (5 Commando) organized and trained, and of course their many experiences through 18 months of service, including heart-wrenching accounts of the atrocities inflicted by the rebels on the European (mostly Belgian) residents. This is better than any adventure novel--it really happened. If you are a student of military history, African history, or just like reading these types of stories, I highly recommend this book. Now for the book itself (e.g. the paper, binding, print quality, etc.). This is advertised as a reprint. To be more specific, this appears to be a reprint that was made by scanning an earlier printing and then reprinting it. The text is very readable, but is not "clean", like you would expect from a typeset edition. If you've ever scanned a B/W document (at 300 DPI, say) and printed it on your laser or inkjet printer, you'll get the idea. It's readable, but not perfect. This has two downsides: first, sometimes the text shows flaws in places where the scanning was imperfect (the scanning head moved slightly or some such thing). Second, the pictures look like they were printed at very high resolution on a laser printer, and are not the high quality photos that appeared in earlier editions of this book.I found this to be disappointing--thirty dollars isn't cheap. I have hardcover books (good ones) that cost less than this book, and for the price I would have hoped that more care and attention would be put into its preparation. Scanning, followed by the use of OCR software and several rounds of proofreading would have resulted in a boot with much better print quality. This may have something to do with the fact that Paladin Press is a small publishing house, and so they may not have the resources to dedicate to making a better-quality reprint. That, or they chose not to use them.I would describe this book as a trade paperback. The quality of the paper and binding seem to be on par with other books of this type that I own. Take care of the book, and it should last a while, I would imagine. So, is the book worth the $30 (plus shipping and tax)? If you really want a book by Colonel Hoare, you don't have much of a choice, as earlier editions of his books are much in demand and very expensive. Personally, I'm satisfied with it.

Mike Hoare, Congo Mercenary (London: Robert Hall, 1967). A firsthand account by the head of Commando 5 on a “rabbit shoot” to liberate the eastern Congo (including Stanleyville) from the Congolese rebels. The actual campaign turned out to have been much more difficult and problematical, but showed that in insurgent situations, speed is of the essence in tactical terms, but is most appropriate when coupled with strategic purpose. This work accents discipline and the weeding out “alcoholics, drunks, booze artists, bums and layabouts” who seem drawn to mercenary activity in that (and any other) era. The author also shows how “Column warfare from an infantryman’s point of view is most unsatisfactory.” Rough justice is also dealt out, not just to the “Simbas” but to mercenaries who act up (one who rapes a Congolese woman and then kills her has both of his big toes shot off by Hoare). Stanleyville is indeed “the “Inner Station” of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.” The book ends with the military coup of Joseph Mobutu who ousts President Kasavubu and Prime Minister Moise Tshombe. Mobutu would rule the Congo for decades, loot it of billions of dollars and never pay his mercenaries or his army enough to keep them from behaving lawlessly. Penny wise and pound foolish it would appear.

First off I want to say, like many reviewers have already stated, that Col. Mike Hoare is a superb writer. He has an incredible grasp on the English language and he writes seamlessly and perfectly. This makes for an enjoyable read. One aspect of this book that really captured my interest was the undeniably romanticized notions of adventure I think we commonly associate with mercenary life. To this end, Col. Hoare delivers in brilliant fashion. We begin with him detailing the rebellion and the chaos and confusion that followed his offer to form a mercenary unit, which he comes to call 5 Commando. He details the recruiting process, the vetting out of the less-then-desirable men, the short training they received, and the arms and equipment they were issued- although this was a challenge unto itself. Throughout the book he also details the tactics used, why he chose to give the orders he did, and the challenges they faced when executing these plans- in some cases relying heavily on luck.I found it infinitely insightful how the world news media hampers his every move. These journalists approach the situation with a per-conceived notion that mercenaries are scum (getting paid to kill your fellow man is something most have issues with), and thus make their reports to fit this image, despite the numerous innocent civilians -both black and white in skin color- that his men save. Although this was a minor, albeit consistent, theme throughout the book, I felt it really opens one's eyes to the bias nature of news reporting on war. We all know news media loves to report on sensational stories, even if that means embellishing the story, but we see in this book the adverse affects it has. Also related to this theme, is how the communist world gets in an uproar in support of the rebels, and we see first hand the how and why of these cold-war proxy wars. Each side puts blinders on, refusing to acknowledge the horrible atrocities committed by it's side, while promoting those committed by the other side, and much like the bias reporters, only focus on what they want to see/hear.Another thing I thought was interesting was how the book was split into 3 sections. During the first one, we get a taste of the challenges faced by 5 Commando is training and fighting. Both the mercs and rebels are poorly trained. The rebels fight with spears and WWII-vintage German Mauser rifles. As the book progresses, so too does the quality of soldering on both sides, as the Commandos get more training, better leadership, better arms and equipment, etc. But again, the rebels likewise begin to improve in quality; Cuban advisers arrive to lead them, Chinese Aks and artillery begin to arrive, and so forth. Although this is a true story through and through, I enjoyed how the book played out like a traditional story, increasing more and more in tension, with Col. Hoare always on the verge of defeat, and as the tension builds, it comes to a climatic ending. All in all I enjoyed every bit of this book and look forward to reading Col. Mike Hoare's other books. Highly recommended.
