I’ve read Kellerman’s books for decades. I still remember the first one, aware even then, that his work was different. He’s a uniquely-talented writer, easily able to enthrall a reader with a glimpse of dark and twisty California crimes. Kellerman’s books work because they are consistently good. Intelligent, fast-paced, smooth, confident writing. Believable dialogue that is realistic and often humorous. What always surprises me most, is that Kellerman can take a basic murder/mystery story, and spin it into an intricate and complicated tale that has steady momentum and near-constant movement. Never dull or plodding. Nothing tedious or inconsequential. Perhaps the true success of the books can be attributed to the genuine likability of main characters, Alex, Milo and Robin. These are characters that have literally stood the test of time. Familiar, comfortable and welcome, but always evolving too. I know of very few writers whose can successfully sustain some of the same characters for the span of actual years. Kellerman does it seamlessly, and the reader is happy to pick up the thread with these three people again. With books in the Alex Delaware series, the reader gets an inside look at police procedures, psychological insights and enduring friendships/relationships. Kellerman is one of the few authors whose books I await and often pre-order. Each book provides reliable entertainment, as does this latest offering. If you are new to Kellerman’s books, congratulations. If you are a long-time fan like me, this latest book will provide you with the elavated psychological drama that you have come to expect. Curl up and enjoy. Well worth the time and money spent.
I've read all of the Alex Delaware novels over the span of years; wait impatiently for the next one: read and re-read them over and over. I suggest you start from the beginning so you won't get tripped up by past references, however, Jonathan does a great job of backing a one time or new reader into the picture so you don't feel lost. His characters, Alex, Milo, Robin, Reed, Binchy, Petra, even Blanche the Frenchie, and her predecessor Spike; you can't help but look upon them as old friends. NIGHT MOVES is everything I hoped it would be. Murder mystery wrapped in a blanket of futility, guess work, false starts, lots of digging, all the while enjoying the intrigue but also the closeness of these two best friends (Alex & Milo) who play nicely off each other's strengths and weaknesses. The cynic and the optimist, two brilliant minds working I'm their own OCD methodical way to get to the bottom of a good old fashioned whodunnit. Jonathan Kellerman is my all time favorite author for a reason. And I love books with continuity, and old friends who never let you down. If you love a great read, again, start at the beginning of the Delaware series, you'll be in reading heaven for a long time, as soon as one is finished, frantically searching for the next book anywhere you can find it!
I've read everyone of JK's books over the years. It's as if something's happened since he wrote The Murder's Daughter, a fantastic stand alone the was torn to shreds by reviewers. Since then the Delaware books are formulaic with no inight to Alex or Milo as people. This one is downright convoluted with a red herring suspect that was persued just because the was odd. That drove half the book., When the fellow was cleared it was like, heck I just wanted my time reading this.Almost everyone of the characters are seen in this book From Peter to Moses. Flat and there only to please fans that like them.I gave it three stars because it's a decent book average for JK excellent for a lesser writer.I wish he'd go back and get out of the rut even revisit Butchers Theater or Murder's Daughter or something totally new because Kellerman is talented imaginative and wonderful. He can write truly amazing books. This isn't one of them.
Too many twists and turns, too many characters so we forget who some of them are. It was very difficult to keep up with the story line with new people and situations introduced constantly so you can never guess the outcome. I would not call these introductions "red herrings" as they were not that good. The last two or three chapters consisted of the author, through Dr. Delaware and others, explaining all of the previous events in the book. A good author (and generally Kellerman is good) will work out the ending in the story line, not to have it discussed after the book is essentially finished (without the explanation). I think this is his worst book. Not terrible (I was able to finish it) but in retrospect, I would not have wasted my time reading it.
I have read all of Mr. Kellerman's books, but in recent years I have vowed I would never buy another one of his. Unfortunately, I always give in to temptation, hoping that he has improved his novels. Over the past few years, his books have read like Google Maps, describing his characters driving over streets and avenues that most of his readers have never known and probably never will. He has also been tempted into detailing surrounding botany. Is it possible that his editors demand a certain number of words and/or pages and he has no other resource but to fulfill these demands with unintresting and boring details?
