This third book in a series featuring a couple that was destined to be together in a variety of adventures and family intrigue is a fun ditty that mixes up several genres (romance, mystery, historical fiction) with liberal nods to the archetype works on which it’s based. Though readers will benefit from reading the first two books, the many references will just make you want to go back and delve deeper. This episode in the life of Henrietta and Inspector Howard is clearly designed to take these beloved characters into a new era, just as possibly into English country house territory as into the tradition of married sleuths who hang out a shingle. Each time you’re certain you know which way this is headed, Cox throws in another ringer. It’s a stay-tuned novel that will make the news that a fourth is coming soon very welcome.
As much as I’m a Chicago girl, I was excited to see Clive and Henrietta take on new territory in the form of England. They see the last vestiges of old-school English aristocracy in action, and it’s actually a bit maudlin (in a good way).Sometimes I want to shake Henrietta and tell her to grow up, and sometimes I want to poke Clive in the chest and tell him to stop being a boor - but isn’t that how you know you want to keep reading to watch the characters do just so?There are 2 big (at least to me) plot developments that occur in regards to both Henrietta and Clive’s immediate families, and I can’t wait to see what tumultuous events unfold in the next installment. Keep writing, Michelle!
Overall I did enjoy this novel, although, the mystery part of it was, I think, really a red herring and the main purpose of all the meandering story lines was to introduce the next book. I will get the next book but am expecting a lot of loose ends tied and some interesting mystery components.
If you love a great, well written story I highly recommend "A Promise Given" by Michelle Cox. Henrietta and Clive are beautifully written and the perfect couple from completely different backgrounds.. Even if you're not from the Chicago area you really feel like you're in 1930's Chicago. I would start with the first book, "A Girl Like You". I was drawn in in the first pages with all three books. They are so will crafted. I'm always sorry when the book ends. Michelle Cox is a royal storyteller who will transport you to that time and place. She is a favorite of mine. I can't wait for the next book!
Another excellent addition to the series! Cox continues to grow as a storyteller. This book has more mystery than book 2 (hooray!). This book explores Henrietta and Clive's relationship as they become a married couple. Henrietta matures, but still retains her spirit. I appreciate that Cox doesn't write them as a contemporary couple dressed in historical clothes. There is a respect for the restrictions of the time, even for plucky heroines and their partners. Nevertheless, the couple finds their way to an understanding. Also, Henrietta is less whiny/pouty about her needs -- an improvement from book 2!As always, Cox does a fantastic job with the setting -- detailed and immersive. She also continues to excel at writing a large cast of characters who are all easy to keep straight because of how well they are characterized. I'm already looking forward to book 4 and their return home.
This is the last book in this series that I will read. I prefer mysteries and felt the author dwelled too much on the love between the main characters. Nothing wrong with that, if you want to repeatedly hear how enthralled these two are with each other. I gave it 3 stars because its a good story, just too soap opera for me. Romance folks will probably love it.
This was a little bit different because it was set in England rather than America -- and Clive was more edgy -- probably because of his family and their upper class mentality! It was a very good read -- a bit slow in the beginning, and it took me some time to really grab onto it. But it was rewarding, and set the stage for more stories along the way. It will be fun to see where the author goes next, and how she helps us understand Henrietta's mother and grandfather and for that matter the rest of her family better. I can't wait for the next book -- Soon I hope!
A Promise Given brings the characters in Michele Cox’s Henrietta and the Inspector Howard series to a new level of depth and interest. Moving into the loftier worlds of Chicago’s north shore and the upper classes of early 20th century England, Cox’s deft writing whets the readers appetite for the next books in the series. Romance, mystery, detective work, and period perfection- it’s all here!
